yes your salary might be high but how much of it is taxed and how much can you save each month?

My point exactly. Salaries as such mean little. Housing and utilities are a major component of cost of living. Some places would make owning a car essential.
People were often sceptical when I told them I saved at least AUD1000 a month working in a Chinese university: but it was true.

Yeah, my wife and I have saved around 5000 quid since about February 2004, in China. This despite the fact that my salary isn't that high. The reason? Living costs are so low - rent, bills, etc are all paid by my school. We even have a maid!

Many years ago I was in Taiwan and making excellent money. At the time, I was saving about $2000/month after all expenses, which was pretty phenomenal for me at the time, especially as Taiwan isn't a super super cheap place to live. Granted I didn't go out drinking every night, but I lived a very comfortable life while I was there.

That's pretty impressive. A friend was in Taiwan for a year and didn't save all that much. he was working for a crappy chain school though.
