hey, i've flying back out to Buenos Aires from Madrid on January 5th and as i've never been before i thought about spending a couple of days in Madrid before leaving. My question, as the title of the thread suggests, is:

-Is there anything to do in Madrid straight after new year? Are the shops open? Are the sales on? Museums? Bars, restaurants? I'd love to see some of the city but it seems a bit pointless if everything is shut and the place is dead.

I can't be in Madrid for new year (although that would be nice) and would probably aim to get there for the 3rd.

As far as I know everything�s open: you�d be here on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday so theoretically there's no reason for stuff to be closed. I�ve been here two years and can�t remember anything being shut then (it's a shame you�ll be missing our Monday night pub quiz though)

Cheers for the response. Some european cities are just dead after new year, not like in england where all the sales start and things start to kick off again. Hopefully, Madrid'll be fully functioning-2 days to see the place, any recommendations? Gutted about the quiz night...

The Reina Sophia to see "Guernica", the Thyssen (all of it), the Prado (just to see how Goya went from chocolate-box cover rubbish to superb pre-expressionist madness), the Santiago Bernabeu stadium (preferably to see a match, which is often possible on a Wednesday or just to do the tour), the Retiro (the main park), the clothes shops going up north from Gran Via along calle Fuencarral inlcuding "El Marcado de Fuencarral" (hip clothes etc), lunchtime tapas along calle Cava Baja (just to the west of metro La Latina). Bring a nice warm jacket though, as the weather then is normally sunny but cold.
