Hello all!

I recently got back from teaching at an eikaiwa in Japan. I've been back stateside for about 2 months now and am itching to work abroad again. However, I want to improve my credentials...

I am most interested in living in Thailand. I have considered doing the CELTA and hacking my way up the ladder from there. However, with wages being what they are, this may be financial suicide (hard to afford re-education should TEFL not work out).

So, now I am seriously considering getting my teaching certificate here and applying to international schools in a few years.

So, I was wondering if anyone here had any suggestions on how to go about doing this. I am going to contact the alternative certification office in my state, however, learning to teach in Montana might not be quite what I am looking for...

So, I was wondering if there were any education programs geared more specifically toward teaching in an international school.

Thank you very much!

Sounds like you are on the right track. I am working towards alternative certification here in Florida now. If you are interested in teaching ESOL, Florida is a great place to be right now, as jobs are numerous. I have no idea what the situation is like in Montana, but check out the National Center for Alternative Education website to learn more about the programs in Montana (and other states as well). As far as education programs that are geared toward teaching at an international school, I am not aware of any.

Good luck,
Kirk

You might want first to determine which level of international school teaching you want to do: elementary or secondary. For either level, make sure you take some courses in language development, language acquisition, language teaching, and multicultural education. And to make yourself more marketable, try to specialize in more than one subject area (if you can).

There is quite a lot of information about international schools on these forums. Do a search!

To teach in an international school you MUST have a teaching degree, not just an ESL degree. The teaching degree MUST include practicum.
