Is there a job market for TEFL teachers outside of San Jose? I mean well outside of San Jose, like on the coast or elsewhere? Does anyone have experience or school recommendations in Costa Rica that are not in San Jose?? And what is the possibility of only working for 4-6 months, and not having to sign a one-year contract?
Thanks for the help! |

Well, Im working in San Carlos right now, and since the rainy season ended its been georgous. In my experience there is quite a good market for esl teachers outside of the central valley, but only in the other major cities.
Probably not really much on the coast, but Im not really sure. The other thing is that all the jobs outside the central valley pay a lot less, but the cost of living is less also. If youre willing to make some sacrafices you can live off of very little money. Right now I work 12 hours per week (at about $3.50 per hour) and live about middle class, by costa rican standards.
I have seen some really nice schools, around here, that pay very well, but they all require residency, which makes it really hard for a north american to work there, unless you marry a local.
Ive been offered jobs in San Jose that pay a lot more than Im making now, but I hate big cities, and for me the money isnt worth it.
If you have any more questions feel free to IM or email me. |

Hi, I am currently living in Heredia and have found it to be much more low key than San Jose. I have had no difficulty finding work and if you like the nightlife you would be only 20minutes from San Jose. I make around 5 dollars and hour and life is comfortable. 2 bedroom apt with a view. I like to eat out and do that fairly often. I would definitly recommend Heredia. Good luck. Ben |

I tend to go home rather late at night. My experience in Acapulco was that taxis charged extra tourist prices after 23.00 when busses stopped running. So I chose a place I could walk home safely in som 20 minutes. How's Heredia if you go to San Jose for the eve?
The reason I go home late is that I watch / listen to musicians and then talk to them if possible, may be have a beer. got nice contacts, but they work late hours. |

Depding on how late you are talking. I would just take the bus. I havent had any problems in San Jose. If you are interested in that scene I would personal message Doreen or D. She seems to have a good job in SJ. Ben |

In Acapulco the bus service ends at 23.00, to give taxis a chance to serve.
