In the country where you teach, how do the locals say 'your fly is open?'

Don't ask why this came up... Embarassed

In Mexico, they say psst...pajarritos a volar! translated as 'psst, the birds are flying away!'

This is definitely teaching related... Laughing

In Japanese (slang)..."shakai no mado" literally translated means, your "social window" is open. Shocked

To call your fly(zipper) a "social window" has got to be one of the funniest things I've ever heard. Mr. Green

Czech: You dont have your "przikopitz" closed.

Can't get a cut and dry explanation for what a prziklopitz is exactly but in this case its some kind of cloth flap at the top of your trousers.

Anyone know why the heck we call it a fly?

Maybe it's because it (well the zippered ones at least) goes 'bzzzz' when you do it up! Laughing

In French it's 'braguette', my personal theory on why it's called that is because for so many men (most often the misinformed) it's seen as an area to brag about. Unfortunately the ending 'ette' is usually tacked on to a word to imply small so don't ask me what happened there! Shocked Razz

Must be like a fly on a tent, like the opening.

Ok, here's what takeourword.com has to say about it:

'Technically the word applies not to the zipper itself, but to the cloth flap that covers the opening. It is the same word that is used to describe a flap over the entrance into a tent, also a fly. It comes from the notion that such flaps look a bit like wings.'

Huh, I like my explanation better Wink

Well as my location has it, Paris! More specifically I am sitting against the pillows on my left bed, in my room, in my apartment, which is situated on the 2 floor of my block, which is itself located in Maisons-Laffitte (to the North-West of Paris central), Ile-de-france, France, Europe, Earth, Milkyway Galaxy, the Universe (which naturally revolves around me). Well this is my third furniture variation, when I had the two beds pushed together the right hand side was kind of hard to get to and I still ended up sleeping on one bed or the other as I have 2 single doonas (quilts/duvets/comforters). This way I can use one bed for a week and then switch to the other while I wash the linen from the first one, invite a friend over without worrying about shifting the furniture and making up a bed for them and since my only source of light in the room is from my lamp it works a lot better having my night table in between the two beds. Also although I like a bigger bed, I'm quite used to sleeping in a single so even if I pushed them together and had a double doona, I'd probably still end up sleeping on one side or the other anyway Razz Very Happy

Gee, I'm sure everyone found that riveting,

You should have replied, "That's not a bird, baby; it's a CONDOR!"

Perhaps Yucatecans consider themselves more well endowed than chilangos. A similar expression here uses pjaro instead of the diminutive pajarito. Cool

I asked the housemates if there was a special expression in Maya that they use to tell someone his fly is open. Their response (translated to English): "Your chicken is escaping." Shocked
