Now THAT is the million rial question!

There has always been much debate in the "expat community" of whether the loony brigade are mad to start with, or whether life in KSA makes them that way. General consensus is that in most cases it's a bit of both.

If we could expand this thread to include all expats, I have known quite a few! I have previously worked as a nurse in KSA.
Two that spring to mind are from my Taif days. One Jamaican working for a large US contractor was found in the centre of Taif smoking and selling pot. His defence statement in court was great! "I am Jamaican, smoking pot is my birthright!'. The second was an Aussie who worked for a helicopter company. A gang of us used to go scuba diving at a beach to the north of Jeddah (Can't remember the name of the beach but I think it began with 'S') We used to take our 'supplies' down, bury the unused supplies and mark the spot for retrieval next time. No point in bringing them back and risk getting stopped at the police check point. The police got wise and used to probe the beach and sometimes found the cache. The Aussie was arrested on Monday morning in Taif, the police had found his cache - he had put his name and address on it!

An expat guy i had the 'pleasure' of having to spend time in Jeddah with. Early on dialogues between he and I went something like this:

He: So, Basil, what kind of car do you have back in the UK ?
Me: Toyota ? You ?
He: Well, I've got a BMW ! (sneer)

He: Basil, how many children do you have ?
Me: Two. Why ?
He: Just two ?? Well, I've got 4 ! (sneer)

He: How long have you been teaching, Basil ?
Me: Around 24 years.
He: Really ? Well, I've been teaching for 26 ! (sneer)

etc etc

After a few of these time-wasting exchanges, I decided he wasnt worth getting to know. Not interested in these kinds of 'competitions'.

Odd !

Best
