Hi all. This is my first post, but I've been reading the boards for months, and am so appreciative of all the great information you have all shared!
I'm planning to come to teach in Costa Rica early next year, and am wondering if anybody who has taught / is teaching in the San Jose area can give me an idea of what level of students I can expect should I be working for one of the on-site business training institutes (like Pro-English, Ingles Empresarial, etc.), which seem to be where a lot of the jobs are available. I'm taking a TEFL course right now and would like to be doing my sample lesson plans and personalizing my learning with an idea of what my future audience is likely to be.
In your experiences teaching adults at these type of language institutes:
- Are students typically beginner, intermediate, advanced?
- What kind of English training / background to they typically have?
- What are their objectives in learning English? Specific vocab categories or skills that they are particularly interested in learning? (as I'm studying TEFL in the US, instruction tends to focus more on teaching basic survival English, and I wonder if the focus might be somewhat different when teaching in a country where English is not the primary language)
Any thoughts from your own experiences would be greatly appreciated! |
