A friend of mine worked in Suzhou and loved it(It is a really nice place).
But as far as I know it pretty much ALWAYS depends on the school. |

I have lived most of the time of the past nine years in Guangdong; I did one stint away in Shandong proviince, and since my boss was a bit stingy I had to take a hot bath on weekends in tourist hotels. I combined this necessity with tourism-related travelling to Jiangsu towns such as Xuzhou and Wuxi. I would say, Suzhou (don't confuse it with 'Xuzhou'!) is one of China's most attractive places!
In Guangdong, Zhaoqing is a laid-back and smallish place somewhat reminiscent of Guilin, yet it is sufficiently modernised. There are good tertiary instittutions there, although I cannot really recommend any training centre in this town (having worked in one!).
Zhuhai is considerably larger and much more sophisticated; natives there (and many migrants from the north) live comfortable lives almost like in the West. Fascinating area (including Macau).
Shantou is not bad although a bit over-sanitised and boring. Wealthy and highly-developed!
Shenzhen is the buffer between Guangdong proper and Hong Kong - the sandwich meat that soaks up all the blood (money) from the poorer hinterland, and attracts the rich but stingy Hong Kongers from across its southern border who own everything.
Some places you had better avoid: Dongguan, Maoming - a lot of things are too loose, and the Mandarins in the distant Zhongnanhai new Forbidden City have too limited clout over local bigwigs! |
