Apparently because the Quince trees are abundant the winter is going to be cold and long. Do we, yabancılar, have any old wives tales where nature signals the length of winter. I can't/couldn't think of any.

groundhog day (i think it's only a canadian thing) - if the ground hog (there's some special one in winnipeg or somewhere in canada, but i think he changes locations every year) anyways, if he sees his shadow then that means we are going to have six more weeks of winter. groundhog day is on feb 2 - i think.

I've always wondered what a groundhog is. Can you get pork products from it? Groundhog bacon and sausages?

Groundhog Day is an American thing as well. In fact, as far as I know, the (O.G.) original groundhog is Punxatawny (sp?) Phil, located in Punxatawny, Pennsylvania. On a side note, I happened to find myself in Punxatawny a few years ago, for no apparent reason (that happens to me a lot). Anyhow, I found the entire town to be obsessed with the little buggers.
