THE body of Indian expatriate Ganasetti Nageswar Rao, which was awaiting clearance for more than 10 days to be repatriated to his native Andhra Pradesh, is likely to be flown home tomorrow.

This follows the immigration directors decision yesterday to waive the QR12,500 fine imposed on Rao for overstaying in Qatar.

Instead, the authorities will try to recover the fine from those who secured the 14-day visit visa for Rao.

Rao, who was 45, died two weeks ago of a heart ailment. He had come to Qatar reportedly looking for a job.

Talking to Gulf Times, humanitarian worker Abdul Khader Haji, who helped embassy officials obtain the clearance for repatriation, praised the gesture of some top immigration officials in allowing Raos body to be sent home without the fine being paid.

The Indian embassy had requested the authorities to waive the fine a few days ago, but immigration officials had reportedly refused at first.

The embassy will fly the body free of cost.

Meanwhile, the body of Tharaparambil Shahu, 52, a native of Keralas Chavakkad, was flown home yesterday. Shahu died on October 28 in Rayyan.

Hey BD... do you think the US would have been as 'generous?' They would continue to dun the fellow's family...

...and if he had been American, his family would have received a bill for the flight from the State Department...
