Love the Japanese Immigration Bureau.

I am currently employed mid-contract in Japan. Receiving a contract renewal looks bleak at this point, and I'm pretty sure that I don't care to continue work under the current conditions.

What I am sure about, though, is that I would like to continue living in the wonderful city I am currently in. I don't want to break my contract, and I don't want to have to fly back home. I do want to continue studying Japanese, and there is a local Japanese school that I have expressed interest in and contacted.

What I am curious about is changing my visa status from Work (Specialist in Humanities) to Pre-college. I've yet to see any site covering this information, and I highly doubt anyone has first-hand experience with the issue. If you do have first-hand experience, it would be great to hear about it. For anyone else out there who can help point me in the right direction to continue asking my questions, that would be great. Any visa consultation contacts, or websites, or articles - anything would be a great help.

It seems like, from the little bits I have read, that changing a Work visa to a Student visa takes about 6 weeks and you don't need to leave the country. Is it possible to have a queued visa so that I can finish my contract of employment and transition right into a different visa status? How would that work?

Cheers.

You can get a visa to study japanese at a japanese language school and your visa is sponsored by the school you study at. You simply go to immigration and apply for a change of status. The language school will do the paper work to get your visa.

On a student visa you can only work 20 hours a week and it should be possible to change it without leaving the country.

Thanks heaps! It's good to get positive information like that. I assume that, when you apply, immigration gives you a temporary stamp for a pending visa change?
