Hello all,
Well I am considering a trip to the Philippines this January. I am finishing my contract here in Japan and it is highly unlikely that I will stay for another term.
I am planning an extended trip to the Philippines as I hope to do some diving and other water adventures. I have been reading up on the web about the country and would love to hear some first hand accounts and suggestions. I will not really have a time limit and I am thinking of spending a month or two within the country.
1. Can anyone suggest a cheap hostel in Manila?
2. What places of interest would you recommend? My LP is in the mail, but and personal suggestions would be great.
3.I understand there is almost no real demand for English teachers in the Philippines, but could an experience teacher find supplemental work to top up funds if needed?
4.Has any one here worked in the Philippines as an ESL teacher ? Whats the best way to find employment and how was your experience?
Thanks for any advice you can offer! |

You might go to the WOW Philippines website for information about traveling there. I visited the Philippines several times when I was in the Navy, sometimes spending as much as a month at a time there. Since you're going to be on Luzon, I would most definitely recommend a trip to the resort in Baguio. If you like parks, go to Rizal Park in Manila. I would definitely recommend eating some of the local food (I'm partial to pancit myself) and making at least one trip to a local sari-sari store. |

To answer your questions...
1. So many cheap hostels...Hotel Sogo is cheap...but I wouldn't want to stay there...try hostels.com
2. Try Banaue Rice Terraces, Chocolate Hils, Bohol, Boracay...Tagaytay and Taal volcano are nice...Rural Philippines is more interesting than Metro Manila in terms of scenery.
3 + 4. IELTS examiners can make $20US/hour...Other schools pays $2-5/hour from my experience.
Email me for any other info... |

Here is some first-hand observations of the last couple weeks while I was in Manila, Cebu, Bohol, Davao and Mindinao:

I'm going back in a few weeks again (right now I'm back in Korea to teach a 3-week camp).. and when back, I'm planning for Boracay, Malapascua Island, El Nido, Puerto Princessa, Dumaguete, and wherever else.. I guess that part will determine itself once I get back there again in January! |

How about flying from South Korea to the Philippines. Does anyone know a good website to find cheap fares?
Thanks |

Pension Natividad, do a google search for it, has pretty good rooms for a cheap price in Manila. It is centrally located, it has good security, and they do not allow "working girls" onto the premises. It has a little diner and it is walking distance to just about anything in the Ermita area. |
