On March 7 I am travel to Costa Rica for two weeks to get married. This is my first time to another foriegn country other than Mexico and Canada, and I am wondering about what I should do about safety and what to avoid while Im there. My fiances father is from CR and she has visited there many times, but they just tell me how fun it is and dont really what I can do to be safe and what not. I read on this board about a teacher getting mugged and how San Jose isnt as safe as it used to be. I wont be spending all of my time in San Jose but enough to where I want to know what to look out for. I am also curious about drinking in bars and how safe that stuff is. Any information you guy can give would help me out greatly. Thank you.

Have you ever been to Chicago, D.C., or New York City? Well if you have what were your thoughts when you visited these cities? After thinking about that just visualize the same situation but a lot safer. That would give you a picture of what San Jose is like.

As with a lot of big cities, try to stay out of the wrong neighborhoods. Any decent travel guide of CR should give you the low-down on SJ neighborhoods. Also, walking alone at night, wearing too many blatant valuables, or having the ever-present backpack on will make you a potential target.

Any major world city has its problem areas, the best you can do is educate yourself on which ones they are.

Go have a great time...just be aware of your possesions at all times..make photocopies of your ID and Credit Cards as theft is the biggest problem anywhere in Costa Rica. The good part is that it is usually non-violent but once robbed it is difficult to get help in the matter. Have a great wedding!
