Wow! Glad to see this subject is still open and receiving so much attention. I'm hoping and praying for the best. My first China experience was pretty good. Would have been better if I would have had more of an open-mind. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to a new adventure. I'm an EXCELLENT teacher here in the states, hopefully I can be the same in the PRC.
They better get ready, cuz' I'm bringing it like they aint neva' seen b4! I WILL shatter the stereotypes of and about African-Americans, it's my duty. LOL There are too many positive brothas and sistahs doing the right thing here for Chinese to think that we are all about thuggin', killing, stealing and whatever else they believe. Anyway thanks for the positive information. Peace and blessings!
in the words of Bone Crusha I aint neva scurred!!! LOL,

MS. Blackgirl...you can kinda rap?? That's good...they'll never ask. They think hip-hop is a dance that comes from Korea. It's like a 1991 Bobby Brown video. All you need is a promoter and some beats. Connect with me if you are serious...
I am the FAC Champ(FAC=Far Eastern Conference).
I've been wondering if I should do something over here...but there's nobody to understand the finesse or appreciate when you grind out a phrase just right. IMHO..it may be a waste of time...might as well rap to a field of cows(which I have done).
Ohhh and to anyone that says any ish to you...this is the response.

Ms BG,
The other posters have given a good idea of what to expect. I am black and teaching in Shandong province, and my life here is fine. I teach children and they all like me (and I them) and the adults I have met are also just standard people, if a little more curious - which is perfectly natural. You have been here before so there shouldn't be many surprises.
My social life is really good too, and the only thing that I see as a limit is my poor command of Mandarin.
As far as "shattering" Chinese stereotypes (or any stereotypes), you might do better to put more emphasis on the "open-mind" part. The Chinese people I have met have at least some idea that African-Americans are not just darker versions of the standard American foreigner here. Even if they don't, once people get to know me they have not been afraid to ask me questions that let me know they aren't the exotic but simple-minded people they are often portrayed as in this forum. I am no longer surprised by how well some of them understand the nuances of American/world race relations. My Chinese friends here seem to be much more open to someone who comes at them with no preconceived ideas of who they are, as opposed to someone with something to prove or an idea of which basket they fit in. There are already more than enough foreigners here ready to combat Chinese ignorance...
Was your "duty" remark tounge-in-cheek? That is a burden I wouldn't want - being the model minority for the masses... perhaps better to just be a superstar for it's own merit - it gets tiring trying to save the world from itself, I went through that when I was younger. Plus there is something self-important in that idea too - I am suspicious of the Chinese people I meet who try to speak for the nation and tell me what to think about this, that, and the other. I much more enjoy the sharp people who share themselves with me and give me credit for coming up with my own ideas about things. Sorry, thangs.
Anyway, I don't know if anyone suggested it before, but get your language skills in order! I am in a town where my communication is limited to the English speaking staff at my school and a Chinese friend I made back in the states. Once I can get my Mandarin on I will love to talk to all those hip looking people around my apt, the curious people in restaurants and on the street, and I could respond with more than a smile and a hello to the cute girls I see here and there...
If you rap there is an audience for you in Shanghai. Read Thats Shanghai magazine to find out about the clubs where hip-hop rules the roost.
China will be the bomb if you let it.

jg that was quite an interesting post, LoL. Absurd, but interesting nonetheless. Anyways I don't consider shattering African-American stereotypes a "burden" of any kind--if anything, I see it as my responsibility. I'm proud of who I am and the accomplishments of african-americans and I'm not the type to sit by and allow folks to think what they will of my race. The coolest thing about my China experience was learning from other Chinese students, their customs, their history, their views...lifestyles and so on. In turn I was able to discuss the life of the American college student, but most importantly they were quite curious about African-Americans. In those discussions, I was able to shed some much needed light on being black in the USA. Needless to say, that isn't what they were shown on television.
It is the responsibility of every African-American to show that we're more than a bunch of thugs, and welfare recipients. There are these type of people in all races, however media says it's just us. No matter where I go..China or Antarctica, if there are negative stereotypes of African-Americans, I'm going to be the proof that not all are that way. Ohhhh to be young, black, educated, and gifted is a wonderful thing my friend! Sharing the knowledge is key! W E B DuBois noted in his collection of Essays- The Talented Tenth that we all the share the burden of uplifting our race. Just a little something to think about. I have a great respect for the Chinese and their culture...I don't aspire to be a superstar among them. LoL
About the language--I have been fluent in Chinese since 1998, not only can I speak the language, but I have an excellent command of writing and reading! (taking a bow) How 'bout that a black chick that speaks English, Mandarin and EBONICS! LoL Thanks for tips about Hip-Hop, ...but I'm more interested inYang Xi, and Zhou Yaokun (Chinese folk musicians)
Again, to everyone else thanks for the tips and advice. Yo Kapt. Krunch, we need to "hook-up" when I get there!!! So we can do that Cow Concert! LoL
China will be the bomb if you let it. The bomb?? Who says that in 2003??? LoL
ps, I'm having a killer craving for gongbao jiding! LoL |

Indeed, watching other people to fight your battle is always easy.
The sooner you acknowledge your difference and your heritage, the easier you will find yourself to be that superstar. |

What I was saying, to be blunt, is that I hope you don't seem as full of yourself in person as you do in your postings. Sorry that my slang isn't as up to date as yours seems to be... why don't you post this year's list and help save me from further embarrasment? Perhaps you might want to dip yourself in a little humility too... Once again - whatever prejudices you encounter can be easily dispelled without going around trying to prove something, no one likes a sermon... My "responsibility" as an African-American - this is written where? Or did I miss that meeting... yes, there are plenty of Chinese who want to know about the Af-American experience, and I am more than happy to share it, but I myself find someone who has appointed herself the spokesperson for a diverse group - and someone who depicts herself in such glowing and exalted terms while doing so - as arrogant. Better to just be whoever you are and let them chip away at whatever stereotypes they have formed, as intelligent people everywhere do.
Absurd - you posting your doubts and then attacking one of the few Af-Americans who responded. If you only wanted your ego massaged you should have said so in the original post... I mentioned hip-hop because you did, and to try to provide an insight into where you might - oh, nevermind.

The vanity and self-righteousness of thinking that you, by dint of having learned another language (really not that big a deal, unless you think that you're doing so somehow deified you) have become outstanding is absurd. It seemed to me that you found this wothy of a "bow" was because you are a black woman who did it... are the rest somehow not capable, that seems to be your train of logic... If so, you ought to get out more.
Good luck on your quest to destroy stereotypes worldwide, you've got a lot of work to do, but you are just the woman for it, aren't you? People will form their own opinions about Af-Americans (or any group) after having met members of that group whether you approach them with an agenda or not. If you really have respect for the Chinese then you give them credit for being able to think for themselves, as I said in my original post.
Sorry to have offended your grand sense of pride. I am familiar with DuBois writing, and familar with the reams of other relevant writing that has been done in the decades since then. Thank you for condescending to tell me that not only are you pulling your own weight but speaking for me too. Where can I send the thank-you card?
Peace! (or is that too dated?) |

jg you're AMAZING! you can send all thank-you cards/notes to [email protected]. I don't have the complete list of slang for 2003, but I think I know where I can find it. LoL I find your second post even more comical than the first. I know so many people that are just like you, it's quite pathetic. I won't call you out on the message board, but I truly feel sorry for you. You must let go of the past. *giggling* Anywho--- Thanks for your post, maybe once I arrive we can "do lunch" or maybe not, wouldn't want to cramp your style. |
