Enjoyed reading the article. Dave nailed it, with the reverse culture shock thing. I'm preparing to go home for a visit after my first 6 months in China, and I can't believe how hard it is to get myself psyched up! My most recent communications with my family have left me feeling kinda "flat" - the same feeling you get when you have a conversation with somebody who's perhaps distracted. The right words are all in the right places, but you just know that they're not "with you". That's why I enjoy reading the forums so much and knowing that we all share many of the same experiences. Sheesh, and that's only after 6 months!
Thanks, Dave! |

Yeah, I agree that interview really hit it on the head. Dave Sperling has been like a lighthouse for me and pretty soon I'll graduate and start teaching English in Taiwan or Korea. Sure, I'll do my research and ask the recruter and the school lots of questions but this site is the first and last place (the ultimate place) where you can get the real deal on teaching abroad. I'm also taking some classes and reading books like the Lonely Planet so I know what to expect when I get there, just like Dave suggests.
I hope I can be a good teacher, so I've been lisening to Dave's speech a lot lately for inspiration. I wonder why he doesn't have more speeches. They're SO INSPIRING. When I listen to that speech I really feel excitement about using e-mail and other computer stuff in my lessons with my Chinese or Korean students. I've also bought Dave's internet guide and his internet activity workbook.
I'm glad his ideas cookbook is still free. I'd gladly pay $50 for all those ideas but he's giving it all away for free!
I'd just like to thank Dave Sperling for giving me the opportunity to teach overseas. |

I enjoy this site loads, but I have to ask: are you being paid to say these things?

Dave a godfather?Funny,Sperling does not sound like an Italian name to me,Gino.
But the most hilarious post must be the one that calls him a "lighthouse".

I think Dave should get a job in SK, it would really be an eye-opener.
I think people would no longer be banned for going BEEP BEEP BEEP, as he would understand. Some days SK (Korea) just makes you beepy.
And yeah I agree with the article it can get quite porny over there on the KJDB sometimes, they really need to crack down on that and the flaming more than the cuss words.
Cuz one time I went BEEP BEEP BEEP over there and I was almost banned.
But you can argue with people on the Korean board and post half-naked avatars if you're into that sorta thing! Just don't cuss.
