I just got my own computer set up at home with yahoo BB. I did it through them, because their free internet cafe in Sendai where I did my internet stuff were selling used laptops for 24000Y. I brought one of course. I managed to get it up and running with the help of a Japanese friend.
Now my question is. Is msn messenger available through Yahoo BB. When I was using their internet cafe they said it wasnt available. I did nt think anything of it when I bought their service, but now I have my suscpicions.
I cant get it on my laptop. I get my hotmail and stuff, but I get messenger without all my adresses |

You can do anything on Yahoo! BB that you can do on any other internet service provider. I had Yahoo! BB last year, and I never had a problem. The source is your computer, so you may want to have your friend come back and help you with firewalls that may be up on your router. |

out of curiosity, how much is Yahoo BB and how much did it cost to set it up? I've tried to find out on their website but it's all in Japanese! |

It depends on what connection speed you require.
I pay 3,800 per month for a fairy standard connection speed.
No set up charge is required if memory serves me correct. |

It says something about the operating system being in English and doesn't seem to want to let me set it up. It works if I use regular dial up through the phone line but i wanted wireless. |

you have to set it manually. the cd that yahoo gives you does not support an english os. so first you have to configure it maually. since you have a connection through a land line, i imagine that you have already done this. so go here http://www.eikaiwa.net/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=19&t=000026. this message board is great. if you have any other problems, post them here and that guy jimmy will probably be able to help you out. |

Hi thanks for all the help so far! I am still having problems though. I decided to forget about the wireless and just use the phone connection but I can not send any emails from hotmail it keeps saying error on page. Also when I am downloading movies sometimes it doenloads and sometimes it continues to say connecting even when the network connection say it is connected and the signal strength is strong????? Any more help would be greatly appreciated. |

YahooBB in Japan is TERRIBLE. I'm actually changing providers. Our connection keep cutting out every 15 minutes or so and nothing seems to fix it (we've tried everything, trust me). No support whatsoever. We basically get sent emails saying that you should write an email in Japanese for more assistance.
Not to mention slow loading times (sometimes 2 day periods)... It also took us 2 weeks for our internet to actually work after we connected it! They just didn't turn it on!!!
Most of the guys at work have had similar experiences with them. Try a smaller company. |

Hey Brad S,
Sorry you had problems with YahooBB. I've had their service for a few months now and there have been a few problems but for the most part they are very good. My connection is actually better than the one I had at home in Canada even.
Perhaps it was your computer set up?
As for the 2 weeks, the way I had my Internet set up was that they activated my NTT line in my apartment first and then at a specific date they activate your Internet connection when you receive a modem. Perhaps that is the reason why you weren't connected right away.
I don't think you can fairly accuse them of giving bad support because they can't write in English.
Have you tried their English service phone line? It is 08001111130. I phoned them a few times and they were really helpful.
Ava77,
Can you be more specific? I downloaded MSN Messenger from the Microsoft site and it works fine for me (but I have an English version of Windows XP). Are you using a firewall and which one? I sometimes have problems with hotmail but it has to do with the Microsoft servers, not my actual Internet connection. Perhaps that is it?

If you have a free email account like hotmail or google, and price is important, then I say go with NTT FLET's and use Excite BB as your provider. I pay 3500 yen for 47M service. Excite only charges a 500 yen provider fee because it doesn't give you an email account, which most people don't need anyways (if you have the free ones). |
