Let this serve as a warning to people who think they can dodge the tax. The city ward office just seized 90,000 from my bank account last week. I went to the ward office and asked if they would return some of the money so I could live and pay it back later in installments. DENIED!
Some people i know haven`t paid it in a decade. I have no idea how they have gotten away with it for so long.

Even with the ward tax included the tax rate in Japan is less than half what it is in New Zealand- I just pay the ward taxes, but I've been here 7 years and don't want them piling up.

I spent 6 months outside Japan a few years ago and when I came back I moved to a new city- the bill was transferred to my new city office, even though they were in different prefectures, they do actually communicate with each other, in spite of what some people think! They start adding penalty fees once it's a few months late too.

Some people might be lucky with a slack ward/city office that doesn't come after them, but I bet that's not the majority. It's quite possible some of the people we hear about who say they never paid their taxes were unknowingly paying them directly out of their salary.

I must admit that if I were only staying here 18 months or so and never coming back I would be tempted not to pay them, but for long termers, why would you want a growing bill following you around? I feel a bit bugged by the idea of immigrants to my country evading their taxes, I don't want to do the same thing somewhere else- probably one of the few things in life I take such a conservative view on!

It happens for most full-time Japanese employees but they generally classify us as part-time even if we work full-time so don't deduct it. Last time I heard there is no legal obligation for the enployer to deduct it but some do. ECC does.
