Since the old thread degenerated into an argument about woment's rights to work in KSA, particularly Saudi women and had little if anything to do with Taibah Uni, I'd like to know if anyone out there, male or female, has gotten anywhere with these people. I don't know if it's just that they don't hire single (foreign) females or ???
The have been posting job adverts every couple of months, surely there's someone who they have been interested in hiring. Anyone?
Thank you. |

Do they hire women ? Is there a women's campus ? For Saudi Arabia you should assume that jobs are for men unless they specifically state 'posts for women'. |

According to a recent announcement here:
http://www.tesolislamia.org/job.html
They are recruiting men and women teachers. What they did not say is that applicants should be Muslims.
I don't know whether this is a formal requirement, or whether it was an oversight, or a deliberate omission to be quietly enforced later, but the Saudis do not normally allow non-Muslims to reside in Madinah. Also, if you have kids, to my knowledge there are no English medium schools in or near Madinah.
So, if you are not Muslim, you should clarify this at the source:
Prof. Mansour M. Al-Nozha, President, Taibah University,
P.O. Box 344, Madinah Munawwarah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Tel: 00966-4-846 0020
Fax: 00966-4-846 1172
Or e-mail [email protected]
Everyone is on Ramadan break now. Classes will resume on 12 November, so no one will be available for another couple of weeks.
KFUPM in Dharan is also recruiting, and this is may be a better option for most people. |

Yes, the ad is for both males and females. Also, I emailed them the first time they posted, which was back in May or June, and they said that an applicant does not have to be Muslim. That only applies to Mecca, not Medinah, I suppose. |

Technically yes, it applies only to Makkah. I don't know what the policy is on Madinah though. A lot of people here think it is Muslim only too. But if they confirmed that non-Muslim is alright, then that's that.
Still, I would recommend Dharan over Madinah for almost anyone, Muslim or not. The only reason I can think of for teaching in Madinah is to live in Madinah.
KFUPM is considered the premier university in Saudi Arabia. It is small and very selective. They are serious about teaching English and also about maintaining a high standard of instruction. You have small classes, logistic support - things like classrooms and books, and highly motivated students. It's almost as if you were not in Saudi Arabia at all!
And then there are perks, very nice housing and services, and opportunities for extra evening and summer work teaching on external programs, if you want it. |

Mecca and Medina are BOTH closed to the unbeliever. It might be that the campus is outside the exclusion zone. |

Both Makkah and Madinah are off-limits to non-Muslims. However, the exclusion zone in Makkah is quite a wide one, and non-Muslims cannot go anywhere near the city. On the other hand, the Madinah exclusion zone is small in area, and really only covers the city centre. I frequently drive through Madinah, and I take the inner ring-road, which appears to be the main one, and alongside it is a series of signs and decorative arches saying "Haram Area". I simply don't go in there. I'm sure if I got lost and wandered in, it wouldn't be the end of the world, and a policeman would simply point out that I shouldn't be there and escort me out. However, it would be disrespectful in the extreme to be seen there, which is why I take pains to avoid going in or even taking a wrong turn.
The main reason a non-muslim would have probs in Taibah Univ (which is obviously outside the zone), is the fact that nearly all the city facilities of Madinah are inside the zone, and so you would be restricted in terms of shopping and services. |

Some of the suburbs of Mecca are also outide the exclusion zone. LANSA in Jeddah used to have a branch in Makkah and send non-muslim teachers up to Mecca in the evenings. |

Yes. According to a recent announcement:
"Higher education in Saudi Arabia is segregated by sex and, since KFUPM is a male- only university, all candidates for teaching positions must be male."
It hadn't occured to me that a university specializing in science and technology would be male only. KSU does have a women's section for science, I don't know about engineering.
Unaccompanied women would probably be more comfortable in the Emirates where they will be mobile and have relatively few restrictions. Zayed University is all women. |

Well does anyone know if their package is similar to the other Coleges or Universities. Can someone just call and ask some general questions to post? |
