It's census time! C'mon I can't be the only one who gets excited about being counted?
They came by today, so any number you here in the future about the population of Mexico, remember that I am one of em! I don't think it should really count, but what the hell.
Anyone want to start a pool on how many Mexicans there are? I'll toss in 5 pesos guessing 108,000,001 including me. |

They're starting a census here tomorrow. You have to be home, and physically counted to take part, and if you don't you get a fine!
Luckily I haven't been here long enough, so I don't matter! YAY to being unimportant! |

Interesting questions on the census. They want your name, age, childrens' names, to know if you can read and write, if you speak an indigenous language, what kind of applicances you have, if you have water and electricity, and how long you've lived there...that's all.
In Canada, a census tends to ask a lot about ethnicity and immigration. Nothing like that at all from Mexico, depsite being a country that does have its share of immigrants. In my neighborhood alone, there are a lot of fairly recent arrivals from South America and Korea. I guess Mexico is still used to being a massive exporter of people. |

I really wish more latin countries would have ethnicity and immigration stats. Annoys me as well.
Tons and tons of Asians are emigrating all over Latin America.. (read 50,000 Koreans in Sao Paulo and 50,000 in Buenos Aires now).. Paraguay has a high number - but lower than those two.
Really wish the census reports throughout would focus on those types of things. Would be really interesting. |

Not me. It always annoyed the heck out of me that the Canadian gov't thought it had the right to ask me where my ancestors come from. |

I would think that kind of data is important to a country. Particularly those with high immigration like Canada. That data is used for everything from learning about trends, allocating resources to education and welfare, hell, even by Homeland Security Canada Division (as I'm sure it's called). |

The census taker was just here a few minutes ago. Pretty simple and fast. There seemed to be as many questions about the house (number of rooms; dirt, wood, or cement floor; indoor plumbing, etc.) as about the people living in it. Regarding the people living in the house: ages, how many speak an indigenous language, highest level of education, employment, type of medical insurance if any, and a few other questions. Whole thing took less than 5 minutes. |

108,000,003 then...
I was told the other day that the Korean community in DF numbers 20,000. That won't come out in the census. |

We were counted about a month ago. I think it is every 5 years they do the census, because they asked my husband if I was here in Mexico in the year 2000. I have the chalk marks on the front of my house to prove they were here, adding to the chalked notes by the health department doing Dengue Fever checks. (Do they write on your houses in other parts of Mexico or are we especially artistic here on the Pacific coast?) |

Different census, but I now have a green sticker (which I have nicknamed "Bring out yer dead") on my door that says I have been counted in the Colombian census.
It was completely different to the Australian census I took part in a few years ago, but remarkably similar to the Mexican one, from your reports. Did you have people with fancy PDA counting machines? Very techy!
Does this mean I'm a real ex-pat now? |
