What kind of jobs could one expect to find carrying an MA and several years experience? Salary and benefits would be of concern since I'd be bringing my wife and two young children. Specifically, I am curious about my childrens' schooling while there.
Is it possible to find a position offering a salary to save $1000/mo. for retirement for myself and wife and for my children's education? |

I think you can forget saving $1000 per month and providing for wife and children as a teacher in Indonesia. Even the best salaries at an international school would scarcely allow for this, and bear in mind that wife and children will all need visas etc which is quite expensive. Also note that international (and national plus) schools tend to recruit for a July start, so now is not a good time to apply.
This is a great place for spending money but a poor choice for saving it in hard currency. |

I have friends working at international schools making between $3,200 and $4,400 per month. For someone with your qualifications this would be realistic. By experience do you mean as a high school or primary teacher?
That would increase your chances also.
Some things to consider.
The cost of living is quite high now in Jakarta and if you have browsed the posts you will have some idea from the "Salaries" posts recently, so I won't go into details. Bear in mindd though that the recebt fuel increases of over 100% make it anyones guess as to price increases in the next few months.
Jakarta is not an ideal place for the wife or children. It is crowded, polluted and noisy and offers no facilities for "Family" recreation.
There are no beaches suitable for swimming and you must pay to enter.
There a almost no parks in the entire city. Children in Jakarta go to the malls and the clubs at night if they are 15yr or older.
If your wife likes shopping she may enjoy it but the goods are not that cheap, except clothes, and you want to save $1,000 a month so that's probably out.
Your children will need to be driven everywhere as public transport is dirty unreliable and certainly not that safe for children. You cannot walk in Jakarta even a short distance as the heat, traffic and lack of sidewalks in most areas makes it unpleasant and dangerous. Cars are very expensive here so that is also a problem.
Jakarta can be a fun city, if you like malls and clubs/discos, or can afford regular trips to Bali. Many families enjoy lliving here but most have high paid jobs with a car, a driver, a maid, a gardener and a house supplied by their company.
Most International schools will allow you one childs free enrolment if you work there. If you need to enrol another child it will cost over $1,000 per month.
If you are looking at coming here just to make money it may not be a good idea. If you have other reasons for choosing Indonesia just plan carefully before you commit to it. |

a good job in a good school means that usually you need teaching qualifications. However, there are some national plus schools that will hire you if you are not.
Education is usually free for the first 2 kids, some schools it's free for all your kids.
Some schools it is possible to save over a grand.
One major reason why I'm at the school I'm at now is because of the excellent, and free education for my kids. |

Thanks folks for your informed posts.
Guru, you say you're happy with the excellent education provided for your children. That's encouraging. How will their National Plus education prepare them for an overseas university, say, in the UK or Australia? |

Our school does the IB program. It's used by most leading international schools and is recognized as THE best curriculum by universities world wide. Some students who have failed the IB have actually been admitted into uni on the basis of their work shown in the IB.
Our school does an excellent job in preparing students for life and uni. |
