mendoza is really nice. we just went there for the long weekend. there are tons of vineyards around that are great for a day or half day trip. we went to the most obvious one--the one with the museo de vino attached and it made for a very cool afternoon (free by the way) and yielded a great bottle of malbec, too.
if youre into campign or just trekking you can take an overnight trip to uspallata. we hiked out to the cerro de siete colores (and this could be done as a day trip if you start in teh morning) adn slept in a bed of purple sand. theres probably plenty of other stuff to hike to, using usp. as a base.
if youre into wine or steak mendoza is great. the chilean pesos go really far and its just wicked to treat yourself to argentine filets and bottles of red for way less than you'll ever pay again.
driving across the andes is pretty neat too. get a direct bus. anything else will probably prove to be a massive pain in the ass. |

we paid 9 from terminal los heroes which is close to us and 50 argentinian pesos to get back which is about the same. mendoza was really nice, pretty, all tree-lined and cheap. especially i would recommend buying used books there, at about 1,000 pesos chilenos it is a real bargain. the only thing is that if you go during the weekend, everything will be closed. we went on saturday and came back on monday, but it was on monday when we got to buy stuff.
