Hardly 'in lieu of the king's recent passing' Check out the meaning of 'in lieu of' !

What they got was an acession bonus. 'The King is dead. Long live the King !' It was to confirm their loyalty to the new king rather than their attachement to the one who left us.

And those outside Aramco did not get it. My friends over at KFUPM were told 'We just gave you a pay rise !'
