I sent you a PM about this but just a quick reply here-Gliwice sucks it sucks bad. Wroclaw is alright with castles and museams but man Gliwice sucks. Its like at least 1hr away from anywhere cool like Wroclaw or Krakow.
Anyways I am sorry for being a compleat downer here but I feel I am obliged to answer honestly and aside from a resteraunt called Something Different and a nice DOS theres not much in Gliwice.

There are a lot of schools in Wroclaw and many of them do not require you to teach Callan. You could start in Giwice and move to Wroclaw as I knew someone who did but really, I say if you want Wroclaw go for Wroclaw. Do you have a degree? If so I have heard good things about Profi Lingua.

Wow! I would have to say just the opposite about Gliwice. I stayed there for 10 months in 2004. I worked at Callan Speed for a couple named Zbig and Martyna and these two were absolutel wonderful. They paid on time every month and I can't remember having any issue whatsoever with them. I didn't know being one hour away from Krakow was a bad thing.

I wrote a piece on the forums board about my experience in Gliwice. In fact, I'm tidying up my financial situation here in the States so I can hopefully have another go round in a couple of years. I guess "one man's trash is another man's treasure" certainly is true in this case. If you have any questions for me related to Gliwice, feel free to email me @ [email protected].

Yeah that is true one man's trash and all. As I said I can only speak from my short lived personal experiences of teaching there. Zbig did pay on time to be fair.

I'm currently working for the school where Ben had his short lived Callan career and I want to clear some things up

Gliwice is a great little town! It has lots of nice pubs, its clean, people are friendly, and the teachers are cool. We get lots of hours, we make a VERY good wage, and we go out every night for a beer or some food. A lot of the teachers have been here for many years because it's such a nice place to live.

ATTENTION TO EVERYONE USE COMMON SENSE:
Never make a decision based on one persons opinion. It's like a restaurant; people only talk about it when something bad happened. You never here about the hundreds of people who really enjoyed it. It's the same case with Gliwice, for every 1 person that had a bad experience here, you'll find 100 people who loved it!

PEACE

Couldn't agree with you more dude, its all subjective. Please note in my repies I never said anything good or bad about the school, the teachers or the methode the teachers in SPEED are an awesome bunch and many have been there for years But someone asked me *my* opinion about the *town* and and I gave it. Also, if this guy wants to go to Wroclaw I don't think he should settle.
Peace to you too
Ben

For the record, I more or less agree with Ben. Gliwice's ok for a month maybe, but it isn't the nicest place in Poland. Too much like the industrial North of England for me. Reminds me too much of home and why I left it to come abroad. Maybe it isn't so bad if you have a car and a lot of money, but the short time I was in Grny Śląsk made me happy I live somewhere nicer.

No offense to the other Callan teachers here.

But If you're planning on teaching English for a few years and you'd like the possibility of teaching outside of Poland, I'd think twice before teaching at a Callan school.

Just my 2 cents.

Gliwice! Szczecin! Wroclaw! Poznan! great town:) ! Warsaw! For me its not the money, its not the town, its not the beer:) and its not the women sorry girls but its true they are awesome, its a matter of enjoying lifes pleasures and what city or town has to offer. Krakow has me on my party time and Gliwice has me when i party. We are different for a reason. Better than being at home hey? We whinge and we complain but we always manage to find something great about a town we have been to and experienced. Thank god for change it accomadates everyone. Give me Gliwice, Give me Krakow any day! Shit! Maybe if we did not have egos and so much expectations we sorry humans would be boring. Life in Poland, Soon i will experience it for real, not a holiday like i am accustomed to, cause im here to stay! For me its not the money or town and its pitfalls, its the REALITY THAT I CRAVE!
Warning: I am currently seeing a psychiatrist:) If not today, maybe tomorrow, Gosh! I do not have a degree? I am accepted in this Cafe? SmileSmile

while I can't speak for everyone, almost everyone I taught with has gone on to other schools and, seemingly have had no problems getting jobs. The ones that haven't simply aren't teaching anymore.

I taught at the Speed Callan school in Gliwice for a year and a half (2003-2004) and I have nothing but nice things to say about the experience. I found Gliwice to be lively and fun with plenty of good bars, beautiful women and friendly people. Zbig and Martyna were amazing to work for and went above and beyond to make me feel welcome and comfortable.

Expatben, why did your opinion about Gliwice change? In earlier posts you claim that it is a nice enough town.

About Callan teachers not being able to find work... I can only speak for myself but Im now teaching at Michigan State University and the people who hired me were impressed by my experience in Poland.

Did they know what the Callan method was?

At the time I had just arrived and from what I saw I thought it was a nice enough town. And to be fair if you like industrial towns with pubs maybe it still is but as time went on and I explored it I found there was not much else that I liked so I had a change of opinion.

As for Callan being a carer killer I will say I have known some people who have left Speed but have gone on to teach else where. I guess for some schools Callan might be seen as a positive, some negative and some might not even know what Callan is.
As I have pointed out I am not giving any comments on Speed (except to say that the people who taught there are really cool) and I am not commenting on the Callan methode (as there is already a good thread here about that) but I was asked my opinion about Gliwice and I stand by my post I do not like it. I found it industrial with no real museams just bars and we have those in Engand and Canada.
