As far as I know, they are not advertised...you find out about them "de boca en boca" (no se como se dice, mouth to mouth?? )...
My roommate is leaving in a month so I will propably start looking for a new roommate.

I think we say "by word of mouth". There's probably a better expression though. |

If you're staying for a year, by all means, save up some money and get a kick-a.s.s furnished apartment in Palermo. The situation is bad for those of us who are trying to live here long-term. |
Yanqui, does this mean it's easier to track down a one-year furnished arrangement than something more flexible? Why would that be--is there a specific renters' market targeted toward transient foreigners?
Ditto on arriving in January, spaz and DAML--from Minnesota, not Toronto, but that's close enough to understand the weather. It would be good to meet you both in Jan., and we can compare beginner's notes.
What is the going rate for hostels in BA right now, anyway? Is it still on a nightly basis even if you're staying longer-term? Has anyone looked into homestays? I've been wondering if that's a legitimate option.
Sorry for so many questions--this is a really helpful thread, everyone! |

yes, there is a specific market for transient foreigners - and it's called "paying in dollars". comparatively speaking, it's not that bad. if the apt i'm living in now were in the US, it would be much more expensive. but it's the same rent in dollars as i used to pay in the states and i'm making about 1/6 of what i made, so things don't exactly even out. if you're looking to make money in the short term, don't give it another thought!
however, if you don't need to make money - it can be reat! you can be quite comfortable in a very nice apartment in the middle of everything. google apartments in buenos aires. you can also sign up for the yesba email bulletin that has (pricey) rentals for foreigners as well as rooms for rent, roommates wanted, ads for homestays, etc. most would be impossible on only a teachers salary, but if you pay rent with your salary and everything else with your savings, you might be able to find something.
and once you get to know your students better, they may be able to help you some. everybody knows somebody who does something. but don't put all your eggs in the empty argentine promise basket... |
