OK ... back on topic. I live in Mexico too so I cant contribute any other Spanish ones... but when I was a kid I remember people using "XYZ" (examine your zipper) as a way of drawing attention to one's fly.

This is definitely teaching related... Laughing

Maybe I should have put this in the newbie thread.

Imagine your first class. Teacher speaks no L1. Giggles from the students. Pointing.

Teacher thinks, wow, must be doing a great job my first time out!

Students ask "Teacher...how you say 'este escapando el pollito?'

Burst of laughter from students.

Teacher thinks about it. Pollo. That's chicken right? The teacher's seriousness results in more bouts of laughter.

Think about it now. This is a VERY VALUABLE thread. I propose it be incorpoarted into every TEFL/TESOL/CELTA course out there.

We had a female colleague Guy, who went to a restaurant in Madrid and decided to order chicken and salad.

"Una polla salida, por favor".

On the topic of fowl, a slightly related concept: in Turkish, the phrase indicating impotence is kuşu kalkmaz which basically means your bird cant fly.

You guys are REALLY funny! Thanks so much for the laughter!
Incidentally, the word "zipper" to Arabic speakers comes close to the Arabic word "zib" since p and b are the same. They kind of wince if you use the word, since it refers to male genitalia.
And don't go near the word "zucchini". Smile

I remember kids saying "what does an airplane do?" While this sounds like a discreet way to refer to someone's "fly," I think euphemisms like this were usually intended to further embarrass the absent-minded while he tried to figure out what the reference was. Rolling Eyes
I thought many zippers were actually labelled "XYZ," but upon examination I find the letters "YKK" on mine. What is that all about? Confused

They're not just American though, YKK does zippers world wide. Apparently, according to a manager I had at an outdoor store I worked at, they have a reputation as being the best and you can tell the quality of a sleeping bag or pack by checking to see that it's zippers are YKK, who knew?

On a slightly related side note I can remember having a pretty hilarious conversation with my boss in Switzerland. While she was talking about a 'sipper' (like what you put in a pet's cage) I understood 'zipper' and couldn't understand why her kids' guinea pig would need one! Razz

I think it is vital to keep your social window open at all times- how else will you stay in contact with the outside world?
