Just read in a news site that a school in the United Kingdom has come under fire for offering pecuniary rewards to students achieving above-average examination results!
One student was given U.K pounds 410! That's a whopping RMB 4000 (or a little more, I think)!

I then thought it would really be worth considering this scheme for Chinese schools. And the judges that elect students for their English proficiency should be FTs!...

I am sure this way we could motivate five times as many students to really make an effort and just try to make that difference...
It wouldn't have to be RMB 4000; I think 1000 would be a large enough sum! A runner-up could get 750, and third-placed competitors (up to 5 with identical examination marks) could get 250 each.

I think Chinese schools offer monetary reward to above-average examination results. If I'm reading the chinese correctly on the board in our school, they gave Y10,000 each to the students who scored more than 800 in their gao kao.

College we taught at had a system of "scholarships" for those achieving good results. The amounts ranged from 200 yuan to 6000 (I think) yuan and were offered each semester. Each year one senior student was offered all expenses for trip to UK to do a masters although that prize did involve a contract to return to the college to teach for three years.

where I teach the bright students have reduced school fees.
Roger out of boredom and frustration I have held up the odd 10 yuan for the best response but I armwrestled to get the money back.

Where I teach they offer scholarships to students who achieve good results. I think the scholarships are between 200 to 400RMB. Doesn't seem much considering the school is loaded with money.
