Hey Guys,
I am considering a move to Mexico City around Jan. 2007.
I just had a few basic questions, which I'm sure I could search, but searching always yields 5000 results, 10 of which are relevant.
So, if you could take 5 minutes, I'd appreciate it.
1) How much would it be for a 2 bedroom furnished apartment in a GREAT area.
I am thinking near the Zona Rosa. I am coming with at least 10k in savings, so price isn't TOO much of a factor. I don't need luxury..no doorman, elevator neccesary..just a basic furnished apartment, with a fantastic location. When you get an apartment like this, how much money do you have to put down? First, Last and deposit? Or is it different then the states? Finally, where do you find this kind of place? I googled it, but I got mostly apartments that sounded more high end-$2500 a month and up, with parking, and too many extra amenities.
2) What kind of visa do Americans get when they enter? If I didn't get a teaching job (which I might not), how often would I have to leave/re-enter?
3) What is the expat scene like? I'm in Korea now, where 90% of expats are miserable drunks. Is it similar?

In the Zona Rosa, you'll see some pricey places. For a two bedroom furnished apartment (as opposd to a room), expect to pay between 5000 and the sky's the limit in pesos. You might be better off looking in an area just off the Zona Rosa, such as Cuauhtemoc, Juarez, Roma, Roma Norte, or even Condesa. Anything you find online will likely be higher priced than what you can find through segundamano, a local paper that specializes in such things.

You get a form to fill out on the plane, or can request one at a border crossing. Simple tourist visa. USually, they give it to you for 90 days. You can renew it for another 90 days at 20 usd. 180 days max. You need to leave and come back. With a working visa, FM3, you have a year.

Depends on the group. there are many different expats groups, from Irish expats, to Christians, to the suit and tie crowd, to EFL teachers (read a lower thread on our get-togethers), to miserable drunks, and a million others. |
