I applied for a job in Taiwan and have been informed that my Open University (U.K.) degree is not recognized by the Taiwanese government as it is a correspondence course! Does anyone 'in situ' have any thoughts on this position?

As unfortunate as it obviously is for you, the above situation doesn't seem unreasonable to me. The government maintains a list of accepted institutions. If the institution that you got your diploma from is not on that list then you cannot be issued a work permit.

I do know of a teacher who sucessfully had her institution added to the list and this may be a possibility in your case. It requires the instution to play ball as far as supplying relevant paperwork and if it sounds like a possibility then I would recommend that you contact the CLA to find out what is involved.

Many thanks for your reply. I would welcome your advice as to how I can contact the CLA. My particular degree is a BSc which is a modular degree and " equal in academic standing to similar qualifications gained from other U.K. universities". I intend to pursue the point and contact the British Council as I would be surprised if there was no educational funding from "The West". My point is, given " equal in academic standing to similar qualifications gained from other U.K. universities" who has decreed my degree is from a correspondence course and insufficient to teach in Taiwan?
