following on from the interesting street sellers thread, how about interesting mendicants?
there used to be a leper on the footbridge in Ortakoy who used to dangle his mangled appendages at all and sundry.

Dont know if they are still there but there used to be a mother and sick child sprawled at the Eminn end of the Galata bridge a few years ago, in all weather, in the most crowded and polluted location. The kid was dressed in flimsy hospital pjs and had a surgeons mask on. I couldnt help thinking that if the kid was faking an illness, he wouldnt be faking for long- the cold and filth would soon kill him.

How about the stumps for legs guy in Bakırky who drags himself through crowds trailing pee?

Or the retarded guy who they literally throw out of places and he falls on the ground crying? It's horrible. I've seen him eating seed shells off the ground.

No safety nets here. Depressing topic.

I heard of, but never saw, a bloke known as the Head in The Trolley. He was apparently left just outside Sirkeci station, and was just a head poking out of a blanket in some kind of trolley.

Did I see him in Taksim? Or was that another guy with pieces of tyre covering his stumps? Although Taksim guy slept a lot...

it was very sad to see him like that

There was a teenage kid in Şişli who would be out begging in only a long tshirt and shorts, no shoes EVEN IN NOVEMBER!!

I remember one dirty nosed little twirp who cased Osmanbey. One day, while walking to work at the ole EC, I saw a kid drinking a McD's coke and looking at his snazzy watch. Why did that kid look so familiar? IT WAS MR.SNOT NOSE HIMSELF, cleaned up for an afternoon out!

there used to be a one legged guy who would hang around the entrance to Dilko in Bakirkoy, silently holding out one hand for change. One day, I went past him to work, but I thought something about him had changed. I was trying to figure it out all day, until it finally twigged as I left.

He'd changed legs. Rolling Eyes

I always see the typical mother and child.. but I always wonder why the child is sleeping. Do you think the woman drugs the child so he/she appears to be more ill? They are pathetic.

I used to give money to beggars in Istanbul from time to time until some Turkish friends expressed their opinions that most of these beggars are fakes. No one should have to beg in Turkey, they said, family members will help each other.

Perhaps so. ?

There is an old man beggar in the centre of Tekirdağ. I went to the nearby fruit and veg market one day and who should I see picking nasty tomatoes out of the market rubbish? Old man beggar. That man really does need money, thought I.

Now, whenever I see him out pan handling, I am sure to give him some money.

I am happy to give to those who need. I wish I could know who needs.
