I actually had another user name and lost it and decided to log in again after I saw someone in Zabrze with questions a few weeks ago. You can also see another post from me on the Poland board from either early this year or last.
Sorry, Ben, I didn't mean to come across as bashing you. You offered your opinion and I was offering mine.
Gregfromcali, most people don't bother to write anything good. They normally don't comment until they feel the need to defend.
Again, Ben, no offense to you but when I see something like Gliwice sucks, I will rush to offer a differing opinion and yes, word does travel fast regarding negative opinions.
another thing Gregfromcali, wouldn't a good English teacher know it's World Wrestling Entertainment now ? |

Interesting how everyone who has positive things to say about the Speed school of English and who "accidently" found this thread have usually only posted less than 5 posts and joined in the past few weeks.
Wawel, Leediggy, Bialonoz, Zarny, Phoboes, and Timtheman what's your story?
|
What do you mean "what's your story"? Someone asked for opinions, I gave. Simple as that. The number of posts to this board is irrelevant. Some of us have more to do than sit in front of a computer. I notice you have hundreds. Nice to have the time.
I don't work for the school in question, nor do I have any axe to grind. I don't remember saying anything at all about the school, or anything inflammatory about Gliwice. Just my impression, which wasn't unsolicited.
Calm down. |

Hey, whatever happened to the "accidently" spelling debate? It was the most interesting thing going on these forums. I love the World Wrestling Federation!
Technicly, Gregory, you are correct. Historicly, Timtheman is correct. Philosophicly, I agree with Timtheman. Realisticly, rogue spelling will become commonplace, although, idealisticly, I wish this were not the case. (So why am I spelling like this???) Basicly, until "accidently" is standardized and appears in all authorized dictionaries, Timtheman!!
By the way, since this is a Gliwice forum, I should add that although I've only been to Gliwice once, it seemed like a really cool place. (Awesome rynek in the summertime!)
Cheers. |

If your dictionary doesn't have the American spelling, then you should get a better dictionary.
There's nothing rogue about different forms of English.
Languages evolve.
If you read your Shakesphere you'll find the use of "gotten" are going to tell me this is a rogue form of gotten too?
All English is from England.
But again languages evolve.
Just as you don't talk like your great grandparents there is no reason why you should expect anyone else to.
(Now getting back to the WWF.)
And stop with this "have got" business. "To have" is a state verb.

| At any rate, I highly recommend working for SPEED in Gliwice. Zbig and Martyna are great, the secretaries are wonderful and helpful (not to mention beautiful), and the students will go out of their way to make you feel welcome and right at home. |

Wawel, Leediggy, Bialonoz, Zarny, Phoboes, and Timtheman what's your story?
Expat Ben had a different experience than you, what's the problem?
I'm sure most Poles would choose to live in Cracow. In fact every pole I've ever met has told me that Cracow is the most beautiful city in Poland.
And if you live there and people get to know you then they won't treat you like a tourist unless you're going to touristy places. |
gregoryfromcali, I dont have a problem with expatben or anyone else on this board. He stated his opinion and then I stated mine. Thats not a problem thats an exchange of information.
I am a little irritated by your inference that because I dont post often my opinion is less valid. Whats my story? Im a former Gliwice Callanite who is now teaching at Michigan State University. Ive never posted on the board because Ive never heard anyone make a statement that I disagreed with as much as Gliwice sucks, it really sucks. I didn't realize that one gained credibility by multiple board postings.

So am I. Gregoryfromcali probably thinks you're from England because in the movie, Unforgiven, English Bob (Great character played by Richard Harris!) is from England. Why gregoryfromcali thinks I'm from England I have no idea.

Who are you the Professor Miodek of English?
If you're from the States then why do you have an issue with the American spelling of "accidently?"
Just because you're teaching FCE exam, it doesn't mean you have to pretend to be from the UK.
Anyway, the truth is I don't really care if I make mistakes on the forum.
I don't take myself so seriously that I need to preview all my messages.
It's all language. Languages change and langauges evolve.
But I do get frustrated when people take one form of English and say that it is better than another.
We are teachers and I believe as teachers it is our duty to teach people to be openminded.
I teach in China now and there are actually some schools that make Brits speak with an American accent.
How silly is that?
Needless to say this whole debate on these boards over spelling and spelling mistakes just makes me yawn and say, "Get a life!"
If anyone wants to cut and past my stuff onto Microsoft Word and post it back for me, that fine. But I've got better things to do.
If you want to debate me fine. But show me some class. Let's stick to the facts. The only reason anyone attacks someone's typos is because they don't have a strong argument.
And if you can't understand me then you don't have to read me.
Because I was here before you got here and I'll be here when you're gone.
I've helped a lot of people get started in Poland and that's not going to change because of a few of you new guys.

Tim, We're all cool and the Gang. We've already had our time in the ring. But I'll still have to get you back for the spelling of Szakespier.

You say this but yet your argument against some of the posters on this board was that they didnt have enough posts, which seems both nebulous and bourgeois-classist. My point is that timthemans criteria for judging you is no more boring than what you are using to judge us. You ask for the debate to stick to the facts yet you dont follow your own admonishment. You request that he show some class but you dont do that yourself. |

Now those are two adjectives that you don't expect to be called in one day. |
