Hi,
City governments generally have websites, and use the format: www.cityname.gov.cn
There's usually an 'English' button you can click to get it in English.
I know it's probably not the sort of opinion you're looking for, but it's a start. It might also lead you to asking more specific questions, which are easier to answer than "what's it like?" if you know what I mean.
Also, at the top of the page is a search function. If you haven't already, do a search for each of those places you've mentioned. I'm sure more than one of them has been talked about more than once.
Good luck with your search,

- Qingdao: seems to be a big favourite with the expat crowds! Good
temperate climate; improving infrastructure and shopping; still
extant German architecture and being the birth place of China's
first (courtesy of German colonialism) and still best beer!
- Zhuzhou, Henan: Don't know! That means: it's a run-of-the-mill
crummy nondescript and ugly town in southern Guangdong.
That's my inference only!
- Xianyang: Blistering summers and frosty winters await you here!
I doubt the infrastructure is better than in nearby Xi'an, where
it also is a bit missing though Xi'an has a lot going for it that
attracts hordes of tourists; Xianyang also has historic sites
galore but not many are well preserved. It's about 20 kms west
of Xian.
- Guangzhou: Everybody says it's an environmental hell, a
nomad's nightmare, a cultural wasteland (I wouldn't say that but
others do!); it's terribly hot and humid in summer, benignly cool
and dry in the first half of the winter, and unpleasantly cold
and rainy in the second half of the same season.
Whether YOU find what you are looking for depends not so much on opinions voiced here; it depends on your own frame of mind.
Please, do yourself the favour of buying a good guidebook (LONELY PLANET, FRommer's, Rough Guide) and acquaint yourself with the respective locales.
Jobs come and go, and there is an increasing number of jobseekers with dashed hopes. |

Thanks for the info Roger, but yes I DO understand that me being able to find what I'm looking for depends on MY frame of mind. And knowing MY frame of mind and taking in/ considering others point of view of a city will help ME narrow down my choices. All I am looking for is different view points and I DO understand that they are all relative...I do believe I said that in the original post. So thanks for watching out for all of our prospective naiveties, but it's not necessary.
And dashed hopes can be encountered anywhere, not just China.
Oh, and I have done myself the favour of buying a guide book, but I'd also like the opinion and perspective on a place relative to someone who has actually lived there.

My post is not intended to be a "what is it like" posting....just what comes to your mind when you think of these areas, if you've any experience with them. I'm not that naive, and this is not my first time to China.
My experience w/ people is that they tend to mention things that were significantly good or bad with something/ somewhere. This generally gives some good insight to a place when combined with other facts.
Thanks. |

Sorry, never been to any of them except Guangzhou, which I passed tru on Febuary 2nd 2002. I found it to be a clean and quiet city. I think I found the city clean and tidy because it was New Years Day. I have since been told that it is a noisy, busy and dirty city! Really? |
