Hello All,

I am considering a job offer in Hanoi.

Full time approx. 1100US mth plus finishing bonus of 1000$

How does this sound as an offer? Will I be able to live on this? save a little (I am not a big spender by any means)?

I have been in China and Japan, and I have not really though about Vietnam until recently. But based on what I have read here and elsewhere it seems to be more up my alley than Japan.

Any one with experience able to compare the two places(Vietnam-Japan or Vietnam-China)?

Thanks

Most folks in 'Nam and hence this forum, are working out of Saigon. This may a reason why folks haven't promptly responded. This is not the busiest room.

How many hours of contact time + prep. + having to be on-site per month?

Divide this by the 1100 US per month, to get a better idea.

Everyone is different. Depends on if or how much you want to save, where you want to live, and what kind of lifestyle you want to have.

It looks like the the school doesn't really want to play ball regarding salary(in regards to requesting more$$). The only reply I have received is"we have decided on you" and they seem not to want to discuss the whole pay issue.

Now I realize that I may need to get my foot in the door and make some contacts before the better offers start coming in. The school has been great so far in answer my many questions, and I am really excited about the prospect for working and living in Vietnam.

What happens if I am working for one school and I decide to quit, for a more lucrative offer elsewhere? What are the rules regarding the work permits and such? Is this maybe a good idea? The contract only states that I will lose out on the finishing bonus and flight allowance if I do this.

i haven't gone overseas yet. i'm considering either
northern japan or hanoi/northern vietnam. i'll be
interested what you find out.
that sounds like good wages to me. my hairdresser
is from vietnam and she told me everything is very
cheap----now is the school going to help you out wiht
housing? she told me it's easy to find housing (not like
japan at all). she said some schools will come pick
you up in a car. she said don't drive there----really
different than the usa regarding driving.

Schools here don't really provide the fringe benefits that other countries do such as Korea, Taiwan, or Japan. Everything here is cheap if you compare it to any of the above countries. Finding a house or apartment is fairly easy and won't cost you an arm or a leg, but I hear that the general costs of housing are a little higher in Hanoi vs HCMC. Find a few schools with a decent wage and build a schedule to make or save as much as you want and you will prove to be very well off. I recommend working at a few schools as it lets your schedule fit your lifestyle and helps not getting stuck fitting your lifestyle to a school. It probably is best not to drive yourself as motorbike drivers are well trained for the crazy traffic and worth the extra cents for some safety (?!%#?). Cool
