|
|
Because my college is considering having a two-month long winter break (apparently the teachers didn't have a summer break this year), I have been considering working at a four or six-week winter camp. An employer in Liaoning has expressed interest in having me working at their winter camp. I know some of the members here worked in another city or maybe even province this past summer. Were you guys worried about possibly violating any labour laws and/or SAFEA regulations? |

I do it! Everyone does it! BUT, it is unlawful. Your foreigners residence permit and FEC allow you to work ONLY for the employer named in both. I have never heard of anyone being caught and/or prosecuted in China, but that doesn't mean it hasn't happened.
Apparently if you get caught working at 'another' school in Taiwan (and it seems that many teachers over there have second jobs) you get deported (14 days notice)! There was a big crackdown there last month; check out some Taiwan forums!
I also have a 2 month (paid) winter break and I'm looking for a 'camp' but no way would I go to Liaoning. Have you heard the expression 'Freeze the b a l l s off a brass monkey'? |

Yeah, that's the thing that concerns me the most.

I spent 11 months teaching in Dalian and where I am now in Inner Mongolia is MUCH colder than where the employer is in Liaoning.

Most contracts expressly forbid this, a few allow it with the permission of the employer. Many, if not most FTs ignore this and just do it, and many if not most get away with it. If "getting away with it" isn't your cuppa, then I feel for you. China is not the best place on earth to be an honest man. |

I'd say it probably depends on loyalty. If your school organises some private work for you during the holidays, I would do that. Even if it was for less pay then a private school. If nothing is on then go for it.
I went for a five week trip last Summer and had no troubles. Doesn't mean you won't. I didn't even think about any legal problems until I saw this thread, smart planning as usual. You could always ask for permission from the school, if you get along well together. |

I say just do it. It's common for lots of FT's to do them and they are good money. I have never heard of anyone getting in trouble over them. I say in this case to throw caution to the wind and go for it. |

If there isnt anything in your contract that expressedly forbids you from performing third party work, there is no reason why you cannot participate in this kind of extra-cirricular work outside your contract (DURING YOUR BREAK)
On your break it is your choice to either work or travel, which includes working someplace else.
