Actually, with the exception of the airplane, those were all invented by Europeans.

We're taking bets here on whether Ecuador makes it to October 2006 without changing presidents. It's almost a year away, and Palacio as already been in power since April. 18 months is a long time for a president in Ecuador.

Is Chavez able to stand for re-election or are Venezuelan presidents limited in terms? If he can't, that will be an interesting place to watch as a power struggle for succession ensues.

Is there any chance that Colombia will swing to the left, or is Uribe as popular there as Chavez is next door?

I doubt that there are any restrictions on Chavez's re-election. If there was, the media would have been all over it. Can you imagine the media feeding frenzy that would ensue if he changed the law like Uribe did in Colombia?

What about Haiti? There hasn't been much about it in the news lately. Are they still under occupation, and if so, are prominent left wingers under detention like they were in Afghanistan and are in Iraq?

Bolivia will be an interesting one, particularly with respect to how far the department of dirty tricks will be willing to go in order to keep Morales out of the big chair.

Haiti is still a UN protectorate I think...

Don't forget Peru. That should be interesting with Fujimori coming back...

True, even just for the comedic value Smile Does anyone understand how that can even happen? Last I heard he was being detained in Chile and they were arguing over whether or not to give him to Peru.

Pinochet was arrested recently for tax fraud in argentina.

In Venezuela, The new (1998) constitution limits presidents to only two 6 year terms. So Chavez can be president until 2012.

At least the Chilenos nabbed him. Mexican authorities did nothing when he landed briefly in Tijuana.

for sheer comedic value, nothing could possibly top the return of abdala bucaram to ecuador last april. ive never seen anyone so clearly out of his mind command that large of an audience (well it was either his return or the free booze that brought out so many people). back in '97, this guy was literally chased out of the presidential residence in quito while he was carrying bags of money slung over his back. he had been living in exile in panama up until last april when bucaram was granted a pardon as part of a convoluted scheme by then-president lucio guittierez to avoid impeachment.
in his return speech he called his opponents "*beep*" and "whores". he had a sign behind him that said only "only god knows how much weve suffered in your absence" (bucaram's). he lasted alll of two weeks in ecuador before they reinstated the charges against him and he went back to panama.
all of you should read his wikipedia entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abdal%C3%A1_Bucaram. how many ex-presidents of any country can claim to have serenaded the winner of the international miss banana contest?
