Hello. I have to visit the Japanese consulate in NY soon. On the website it says that you need to bring the following Items:
1. Visa application form
2. passport
3. pass port photos and
4. certificate of eligibility
I have these items ready. When I have applied for visas for other countries I was asked for additional items like proof of insurance, bank statements. One of my friends, when applying for a visa for China was asked for a full medical report, including chest x rays and HIV test.
I wanted to ask people that have been through this process if they were asked for just the 4 items listed on the website or if I should bring other documents along.
Also, I've heard they interview you at the consulate. What sort of questions do they ask?
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience! |

China and Japan are separate countries. I had to apply for a tourist visa and had to jump through a lot of hoops to get a visa.
You only need to take what they ask for as they are separate countries with separate procedures.
What job are you applying for, is it the JET program? What visa are you applying for? |

I am confused.
If you already have the certificate of eligibility, that implies that you have a sponsor for your work visa.
What is the purpose of you visiting the consulate at this point? |

Apparently, I need to take the certificate to the consulate to get the visa before i leave (later THIS week). I'm applying for a long term work visa. I just hope i get everything in time. I'm cutting it really close. I wrote this post just so that I wouldn't be caught off guard by any requests they might make at the consulate. |

COE simply means you have satisfied the conditions of the visa application and you can come in and get the visa stamped in your passport.
In most cases the initial visa you get is a one-year work visa as thats how long your contract is. Whether one-year is considered "long term" is debatable as the minimum length of the work visas they issue here. there are no other kind except 6 month and 3-year visas depending on visa status. |

If you're at the stage where they give you the letter saying come and get your visa... you don't have to worry about any questions. They like to do the questioning before they issue your certificate of eligibility. Unless they pulled up any red flags in your background search like being a deceased swedish man who dies in prison in the 60's... then they'll hassle you straight away and refuse to issue a certificate of eligibility.
I'm pretty sure you're in the clear. |
