Hi
I am interested in acquiring a position combining English with Art teaching and wonder whether such contracts exist - anywhere. My interest is in short-term work (initially) of two months, commencing January 2006. My line of enquiry is not targeted at any specific region, as I am pretty open to finding out what's open to me.
I have a TEFL certificate from International House, London and one year's experience working with Japanese students in London. I have taught in a classroom, privately at home and within banks in the city.
My skills and experiences in the field of art education are varied, including projects with at-risk teens in the US. I am British and educated to degree level with a BA (Hons) in Animation and a Diploma in Photography. I have a US visa.
I would like to discover whether there are opportunities within schools or colleges for combining work in the two areas. Is anyone familiar with such contracts, or is this regarded as perhaps too complicated a proposition?
Any advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks everyone |

Your idea of working outside your home country for such a short term shows a complete lack of understanding of EFL work. It is not economical for you or in most cases an employer to hire a person for two months. You would most probably be working illegally, using a tourist visa. Another condition not advocated by most experienced FTs.
In Asia, Jan. is the begining of Spring Festival. Classes wrap up for the semester and everybody prepares for a month long vacation. This is especially true for colleges and universities.
You are starting you search too late for such a specialized postion. While it is not diffucult to find jobs, finding a specific job takes research and patience. You are expecting to find a job in under one month.
Rethink your plan. Give yourself more time. The job you want can be find. Postions akin to what you are interested in can be found in China. Most of them are relatd to advertising.
Good luck. |

Basically what you are looking for is teaching an art class in English (as you normally do!). Content based English teaching is where its at for language learning.
The school system I am working at (ITESM - Tec de Monterrey) is trying to move more and more of its classes into being taught in English at all levels. I am currently working on a project to get more native-English-speaking teachers to further this evolution in our schools.
The jobs are out there. But like the poster above said, it takes time to understand the state of the field, how to find your place, and to make a good living with it. |
