Sometimes it depends on the time of year. 3-4 weeks is not unusual. You will have to pay the regular 4000 yen for the renewal stamp. No, there is nothing you can do to speed things up.

I don't know. Call immigration and politely explain your situation and see how far along their processing is. Even the bureaucrats take New Year vacation, which means they might be like corporate types like us and are closing things down for the year, so it might be slowing down their usual work.

Was in the exact same predicament in Tokyo, had been waiting for 2 months and they said that they were swamped. Told them when I was travelling and they actually got the card to me, think it took about three calls. And to make things even sweeter, they gave me a 3-year visa and re-entry. Shocking really, seeing as how I hadn't even applied for it!

well, so far, i have called them once and the school that i work for has called them for me too since i dont speak japanese. they also recommended me to go down there in person because it may add some pressure and they might get to it faster. it seems i only have until dec 22 to really do anything cause this is when my flight leaves.

i was also thinking of leaving while its pending. something in this thread gave me the idea. http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/job/viewtopic.php?t=32703 but im not totally conviced yet but if i dont get anything by my flight date, i dont really think i have another choice.

any other ideas?? im going to head down there tom and ask again on my status and see how far they are.
