Oh, after the dealings we've had with that particular office, nothing they ask for surprises me anymore.

In the Oaxaca, Oaxaca office, we've taken to sending stuff instead of travelling 2 1/2 hours each way to take them there, and then they want the copies notarized (which here is costing 150 pesos), if you go in person they will take a regular fotocopy and cotejarlo against the original. The fare to Oaxaca is 50 pesos each way so it comes out cheaper to go there, but you spend time and you spend a lot of other money in Oaxaca.

How about this for an immigration story.
You know how we all need to have CURPs now. Well I kept telling the university that I already have a CURP, but have never had the little card, because I've never know how to get one. Years back I changed my AFORE to Bancomer, because they promised to get me my CURP, well they did get the number, but not the card. When ever I've been asked for my CURP, I flash my AFORE statement. So now, that the deadline for all employees having CURPs is at hand, the university told me that my CURP is not valid, Bancomer must have made it up. And I had to go to immigration to get it. So I went and turned in all my papers, then this week I went to pick it up and they told me I already had a CURP! they have a photocopy in my file--which they wouldn't give to me, but they let me copy down the number. Turns out it is the same one Bancomer got for me, and the date is Dec. 26, 2002! I get back to Huajuapan and talk to the head of human resources, she goes on line and prints out my CURP!

AHHHHHHH!

My employer (university) got my CURP for me. However, I somehow lost my CURP card Embarassed , so I had to go get a replacement card. Went to a special office in one of the government buildings downtown, where nobody looked too busy: mostly eating, chatting, and reading. They printed up a "paper" copy of my CURP from their computer, and I pointed out to them that my mother's maiden name (my "other" last name) was spelled incorrectly. No problem -- paper-clipped a note to the paper copy --it'll be fixed before you come back tomorrow to pick up your official replacement card. I went back the next day. Everyone was still eating, chatting, and reading. My replacement card was ready and waiting. My mother's maiden name was still spelled wrong . . . and still is . . . and will be for eternity.

Clave Unica de Registro de Poblacion

or a national ID number

Mexico came up with it several years ago to take the place of all the other numbers in your life (social security number, tax payer number, school registration number, etc.) But in reality its just been ADDED to all those other numbers.

If I understand correctly, the CURP number is used to track your contributions to the AFORE fund. Is it used for anything else?

Is there a web-site I can go to that I can type in my CURP and see what my contributions are? I have been told there is such a government web-site, but I don't know the address.

Ha! CURP and mother's maiden name stories...
When I started working here the then Recursos Humanos chief insisted on registering me with my whole name, including the maiden name, even though I told her that as far as I was cncerned the name has no bearing on my official identity, it can be found nowherre except on my old handwritten birth certificate.
Anways she insisted and that's how I'm registered with IMSS and of course with the Afore. Our school started demanding last year that we all get a CURP, and pretty much were left to our own devices but that it was necessary and ASAP. Everyone pretty much ignored them. If they were demanding this mystery CURP you'd think that they would give a few clues about how to get one. A few brave souls ventured down to the Huatulco insane asylum, I mean Immigration office and were given the usual ridiculous and contradictory instructions, and of course there's money to be paid.
I seemed to be functioning quite well without one so I continued to ignore the requests, till the new contador called me in and said the university was going to get in big troulble if we all didn't get one, ASAP. At that point someone, I don't remember who, told me tht the CURP was on my Afore form. I checked and sure enough it was, so I showed it to the contador and they wrote it down. A few days later I was called in and told that it was the wrong one, because in the meantime my mother's maiden name has been removed from my official university file. I said that it's good enough for me and that's where it stands.
I now realize that if the time ever comes to actually get any Afore money the whole process could be quite complicated.
Wow, I can't believe I just shared this whole silly process. So I'll share a bit more-guess what my mother's maiden name is? Woodhead.
