Just wondering about the amount of red-tape involved in bringing over one's car/SUV. Gratuitous comments about TEFLers not being able to afford vehicles not wanted here, ok?
Has anyone done it?? Brought over a car, that is. |

Not one single TEFLer here has done that. Why not try an ex-pat website? |

Contary to what Mark thinks the reality is that a few teflers and others have bought their vehicles over here the majority were nato personnel but the red tape was the same .
Bear in mind the vehicle is stamped on your passport on arrival and whenever you leave the country it has to go out with you . Personally its a better deal all round to buy a local car get it registred in your name and sell it when you want to move on unless you trash the car you will get all your money back . |

My point exactly.
By here I meant Istanbul and you can only come up with a few TEFLers in Izmir. Nato personnel and TEFLers-chalk and cheese. |

There are cars for foreigners. No tax paid, perhaps? I am not sure why but these cars are A LOT less expensive than regular cars. My husband got pretty excited when he saw the second hand car prices and thought a car could be bought in my name. He was eyeing a decent looking BMW for 8000 YTL. Then he found out I would be the only person who could drive it.
If a foreigner wants some wheels it is far better to buy locally. The cars really are cheap. |

Is it being suggested that it is cheaper to buy a car in Turkey - with blue plate, of course - than shipping one in from say Dubai or Qatar? I am talking about a brand new car. |

Thought so. And by the way, Baba Alex, don't blame me for the overpopulation of vehicles in Istanbul. I never even owned one until after I turned 30. That's not to say I believe I have some catching up to do re: pollution and all.
It's more of a case of a husband who never had anything wanting to come back with something he can be proud of. Besides me and his son, and his diplomas, that is
And of course, I told him all of what you all are telling me now. I like to have this to back me up when I tell him it won't be worth it!
BY THE WAY: am I allowed to say that I am NOT the Sandy that Mark referred to in the presently locked thread (he quoted her blog - I have one - that wasn't mine).
I appreciate the comments here. And let me add that the thought of driving in Istanbul turns my stomach. Even driving here with my Turk hubby at the wheel leaves me white-knuckled. I'm better off blind-folded. |

Sandy's blog that I referred to in the thread that has been blocked is not Sandyhoney of course. Sandy's blog is written by an well qualified and experienced EFL professional with a Master's in ELT. I had no idea that sandyhoney has a blog of her own. |

Indefinite articles are generally covered in basic grammar. No wonder Mark/31 has been such an abject failure in the field of English teaching -- and in life. |

I am on my second bottle of wine Henry Cowell so I couldn't give a toss about articles. Like they are the reason TEFL is so crap. |

If you buy a yabanci plaka car here, a Turk can drive it if you make arrangements for it. Obviously a husband would be one, but you also see drivers of diplomatic vehicles as well as richer people with drivers (snide comment coming here, I'm sure), so they get permission. i strongly suggest using an agent if you do buy a car, as when I sold my car, it took 4 days of running from pillar to post to take care of it. |

There is no better way to counter depression, insecurity, disappointment, feelings of incompetence, and deep regret. Please have your third and fourth bottles on me. |
