Hello all,
I was posting on here pretty regualarly for a while inbetween jobs in China and now here in Taipei. I was getting pretty worried by some of the negativity from some posters but I am happy to report I've got a good teaching job here and I'm loving it.
There are things to be weary of of course but I say if you are interested in teaching here listen to some of the old hands (the likes of Clark W Griswald), do some investingation of your own and come over. Don't let the naysayers put you off, I got a job very quickly indeed.

Too right zand! Anyone new to this should definately take the negative things that people say with a huge pinch of salt. It's not too bad here - right guys? |

I completely agree. I dealt with some agents while still stateside and got such a queasy feeling from them. Then I researched the various sites like this one and decided to follow the advice and just come here cold. I found a job within a week, and apartment in 3 weeks and I am loving it. Some people just can't cut it, I guess. If you have a strong sense of adventure, you will enjoy your time in Taiwan. |

One quick question: what would be about the cheapest and generally safe (from theft) lodging you could recommend someone coming in with their load of 2 suitcases and a pull bag? I knew of some dive motels for around $30 a night, but how about significantly or noticeably less that could cover up to the first month without much worry? A central location would be helpful too. That's like the only last remaining thing on my mind for Taiwan recently. Thanks alot. |

I agree with your posting about negativity on this board. I think like most forums on the net though, there is always a sense of negativity. It is human nature to report more on the bad things and let everyone know, rather than to focus on the high points.
My experiences in Taiwan have been mostly positive. There are negatives which usually make for more interesting stories but everyone I think has a different experience and viewpoint on what happens in Taiwan.
Taking everything with a pinch of salt is a good suggestion and while there are some purported crazies on this forum there are some people with a bloody good wealth of information. Clark.W.Griswald being one of these people.
It is not right to paint a rosy picture of life here because on the whole it very often isn't plain sailing. The only advice that can really help out is to come and make something of it for yourself and heed the usual warnings that come with travelling anywhere new.
My advice to anyone is to just come with an open mind and plenty of cash for starting up and for those eventualities you can't forsee and you will either like it and stay or move on.
I am really happy to hear that you are enjoying it though. Good luck to you.
