Is it about average for Buxibans to expect teachers to come to the Buxiban half an hour before the lesson (for prep) and keep them for about half an hour after the lesson (for marking)? The half hour before and after (total 1 hour) are not paid.

I think that the 30 minutes prior to class is reasonable as it ensures that you are not late to class and hopefully gives the school advance warning if you don't show up for your first class for some reason. I am not a fan of the fact that you don't get paid for this time as in my opinion your work benefits the school, but I wouldn't personally make a big thing of it. This is a pretty standard requirement of schools.

The half hour after class is stretching this goodwill somewhat and it is something that you may want to talk to the school about if you think that they will listen. I would offer to do that work within the 30 minutes before class along with your prep-time. If they insist on you doing it after class then you could always ask them to pay you for it. What does your contract say about these?

Is that 30 minutes before and after every lesson? If so, that adds up to a metric ton of unpaid time. There are schools that do this, though. Consider how much you are paid. Sometimes schools that pay you somewhat more than average do so with the implied understanding that part of that extra salary is for mandatory marking and prep.

However, to answer your question, I don't believe it normal for a buxiban to expect you to be around when classes aren't being taught. It certainly hasn't been the case where I've worked. Although, as you obviously already know, it is normal for them to expect a teacher to be prompt, prepared and complete marking in a timely fashion.

Thirty minutes before a SHIFT is acceptable. Thirty minutes before each and every lesson is not. Thirty minutes after each lesson is also not acceptable.

I'd say it is irregular as well. I, for my part, wouldn't put up with it. Why not try leaving right after the bell and see what happens?

The half an hour unpaid prep before class is a fairly standard expectation in jobs that pay by the hour in my experience. The half an hour afterwards sounds unusual but I've found myself staying behind in and marking work straight after class so I have more lesson plan time or free time the next day.

I've found most schools expect a newer teacher to be there for the entire time and tat they tend to expect more experienced teachers to be there for less time or rather give experinced teachers more leeway since they've possibly the same lesson numerous times before.
