Where are you looking at teaching afterwards?

I'm hoping to go to Playa del Carmen.

I went there, in fact, I was there with Hlamb. (BIG WAVE, H!)

Personally I loved it. It's very intense, but if you are open to the experience, flexible, etc. it can be a great experience. The people who weren't happy are the kind who maybe never really needed to leave home anyway. IT'S MEXICO! IT'S NOT KANSAS! Know what I mean?

More seriously, I didn't stay in Mexico to work (though ITTO did get me a job offer), I went back to the states and entered grad school in Linguistics and honestly, since I had no background, it was really great that I had ITTO behind me. I've referred to my lesson plans and had a little second language acquisition from ITTO that helped me through my first term.

Absolutely stay at a posada near ITTO (the cheap one is actually the best) and make it a point to get along with everyone. It's intense. You'll be glad to have people helping you out. Have fun but stay on top of the work and you'll learn alot.

That would be a mis-estimation of exactly who takes such courses.

This is definitely true. In my class alone, we had a lawyer, a PhD, a former S.A. ambassador... and quite a few people with extensive teaching experience in other areas.

I would think that the graduates of these one month (or less) mini-programs should be grateful for teaching experience anywhere they can get it and not be too picky until they have some real live experience under their belts.

Just finished ITTO and many had tons of experience in areas closely related to TEFL. For those who maybe don't want to make a career of TEFL, ITTO is a good choice. It gives a lot of info needed to start teaching; those who are keen will learn more on their own. Better to take a tefl cert than trying to teach without one.
