I think I've finally decided that upon arriving in Buenos Aires, I would like to stay, at least for the first few days, in The Chill House. However, I don't want to be too far from Recoleta, Microcentro, Once, San Telmo, where I will look for a more long term place to stay (probably a cheaper hostel), since I understand many of the institutes are located in these areas. So I was wondering how long it takes to get from Palermo Viejo to some of these areas, either walking or public transportation. Thanks!

I stayed in th chill house a couple of months ago. I had a good time but....how do I put this..........if you want peace and a good place to study this might not be the place for you. I'm not trying to badmouth the place this is just my opinion.

Thanks for the reply guys.

Yeah, Chill House didn't seem like the most quiet place on Earth, but that's what I was looking for for the first 3 days. I want to get there, unwind, get to know the city a bit, meet some people, etc... After that I plan on going to a quieter place, where work will have to be done. Any suggestions on what that quieter place might be?

What work do you have to do? Please don't tell me your doing one of those 4-week TEFL courses! You are being SCAMMED. Save your money, trust me.

As a former Chill-House patron and form TEFL-class attendant, I feel qualified to comment on this post:

Chill House is "chill" in tems of hanging out, not in general. I mean, I don't think the Jamaican flag hanging up in the main room is there by accident
Laughing That is, there are not a million people running around like chickens with their heads cut off all day long - its a very nice place to arrive to because its small and you can really meet some great people, a nice intro. to the city. The first night I was there I was out partying till 6 am with the staff. That being said, it's definitely not a good place to "chill" and do some work - but I think rare is the hostel that is...by their nature, they are, for the most part, party central. Unless you can find a place with your own room that's far enough away from the main room, but even that's doubtful you'll find an acceptable level of peace and quiet.

About the TEFL course - I've really been meaning to write a long dissertation on this subject, because I have so much to say about it - although I'm not 100 % qualified to speak on the subject because I arrived " out of season" and I left Buenos Aires - my general feeling is that you should definitely just save your money. I think the amount of work you may find w/ a certificate is marginally greater, and the money you would have saved would reconcile that difference, anyway. 3 months into my little Argentine teaching adventure, I can decisively say I wish was $1200 richer...Anyway, I'll try to comment on this a bit further in the near future, but as an unemployed teacher and fully employed lounger, it's hard work doin' nothin' all day!

Suerte.
