Does anybody want to buy two tickets to see the Rolling Stones tomorrow?
25.50 ea plus Ontario sales tax-- absolute steal. Cool

My mother informs me that her hairdresser coiffed the keyboardist this morning at her salon in Yorkville. Dear me, perhaps this belongs on the Prostitution (pardon me-- sex worker) thread.

Very Happy
OK, It's 2am in Toronto, i just got back from the Stones concert. What, I c hear you asking, do the Stones have to do with teaching ESL? Fair question. ESL is part of the service sector, you see, and the service tourism and hospitality sectors across the country fell victim to fantastic exxaggerations concerning a littleknown pig virus from southern China. The organizers of this concert intended to restore some vigour to the economy, decimated like the tourist economise of Asia by the same virus-- whose name we shall not utter.

I havent seen so many people since Princess di's funeral, tho this was a considerably happpier occasion and thankfully no Elton John. Purportedly halgf a million people, but i dont knoe.

I havent seen so much trash on the ground since i lived in Phnom Penh, nor eaten so much dust and dirt, nor had such a good time either i might add.

The weather: perfect cerulean blue, c. 30 degrees, nice breeze to the north off lake ontario; ie a rarity in these parts.

Hosts: Dan Akroyd and Jim Belushi, they sang a little Blues

The afternoon acts only did 3 songs each

Sam Roberts: I didnt reaaly notice him, as i was trying to get comfortable on the grass.

Kathleen Edwards: beaudacious and young, but rather bland in her folkways way; the daughter of a Canuck diplomat, she tried too hard to be cool and plebeian and frankly bored me. Give me Portishead please, stuff yr folk.

La Chicane: Quebecois act, quite good, too brief.

The Flaming Lips: from Oklahoma. Superb. Energetic

Sass Jordan
Jeff Healey: Sass is a local jazz/blues singer originally from Montreal; "gravelly voiced callassic rock" says the golobe and mail. she belted it out no two wasy about it.
Jeff-- i dont remember hime but i did see him in London in 1990 and went back stage to meet him and Bonnie Raitt, who was v cool. he didnt see me.

The Isley Brothers:
Excellent but too brief-- they barely registerd

Blue Rodeao-- superb, played for longer,, good blues rock: "Twangy folk-rock alternating between sunny pop and soulful balladry (Globe & Mail)

Justin Timberlake-- dont remember but he caem on later and sang with Mick

The Guess Who--- Classic. Unforgetttabl. Worth the privce oadmmisiion alone. Burton Cummings can still belt out American Woman like he did in the 70s and Randy Bachman plays a mean guitar; also Gary peterson (drums) Donnie McDougall (guitar) and Bill Wallace (bass). We elders among the audience obviously liked them a lot. I cant speak for the under 39s!

Rush: never a big Rush fan, i appreciated the baroque complexity of theri music but found it a bit cerebral. Unfortunately reminded me of high school dweebishness. nevertheless, respect. they put on a good little show and they have a distinctive sound.

AC/DC-- major crowd pleasers; tons of energy; extremeley polished and professional, dare i say it populist; they were great, funny, rockin.

And finally, The Stones: well, a bit of an anti=climax really, tho very polished, cool etc etc. Mich still has it. Keith still looking for it. Very supportive of Toronto. "Toronto, yu're back and booiming and on top" shouted Mick.-- i bet he says that to all the girls, like Prague where they were on Monday. They played for an hour and a half which passed pretty quyickly and finished a little after 1130. Justin sang along, as did the guy from AC/Dc for a bit. But everyone was so knackered from the days's heat i think the Sones were almost an act too far. Almost. Plus we know all the tunes and they look quite familar on screen, which is where we were looking at them. Even so, they were LIVE. Mick is an amusing chap, and Keith is....the devil incarnate. Im not sure he knew where he was, or maybe its an act. Anywy, the Stones claim Toronto is "theri favourite city" (its not mine) and they have been here more times than you can shake a stick at, so they seemed prretty genuine. And people like the real gen, dont we? I know i do, even if it comes with a mouthful of dust. Very Happy

PS did i mention the flame pyrotechnics during the Stones, and the fireworks that came at the conclusion? Very cool, very heartening. It was almost enough to help us face the coming winter.

Glad you had a good time, Khmerhit, and thanks for taking the time to rub it in! Laughing (just kidding) Sounds like a very cool concert. Maybe the next time we have an epidemic, I'll make it to the after-concert! Wink

@Gerard...April Wine and Trooper are playing at the Rock-the-Dock concert next weekend as a part of Action Week. Should be awesome. Cool

Ugh...a measly *35* minutes for Rush? The first Canadian rock group to achieve commercial success without selling out to the USA? Possibly the most instrumentally talented band of all time? 35 minutes?! Can you tell I'm bitter Smile

Nah, all in all it was a great time, although I missed many of the opening bands (and the stones). ACDC stole the show, no doubt about it.

C76, I saw a tape of the "coverage" and it left a LOT to be desired. From what I saw, it was the odd 40 second clip of a live act, followed by 40 seconds of random audience screaming.
