I have worked for China Medical University (public ed) for the past four years and I find that there are some differences when compared with what is going on in some private schools. One problem deals with pay. Foreign teachers sometimes have trouble getting paid in private ed. I have recently heard about one school that is notoriously late every month, if you get paid at all! Another school is always late by two or three weeks and yet another I recently heard about hasn't paid their foreign teachers in over two months! At most of the universities, like China Medical University where I work, I have not had this problem. The only time they haven't paid me is during Spring Festival and Summer Break. If one needs money during these times, I get hold of the man in charge of our pay and he can get me an advance. Then, as soon as you return to class time, they settle up and keep current. Makes for a better life than trying to hunt down who, if anyone, has some pay for you. I'll post other thoughts as I am able.

I have worked at a public school and only ever been paid a few days late. In those cases it was only because there was no one at the school on the last day of the month, and if I had made a request to be paid on time then it would have happened, but I didn't mind. A day or 2 makes no difference, but a month, I would be striking!

While not quite trusting my optimism that you actually keep your promise, I do wish that you are in this regard BETTER than the Chinese employers you so often decry over their habit of breaking their promises...
May you keep quiet in everyone's interest

Are we talking about the British or American use of "private school?" Confused

Clown, pardon me: Jizzo the Clown: the O.P. explicitly says the 'China Medical Univesity", then goes on to clarify that it is a PUBLIC ED. school; I guess this is neither British nor American parlance but commonsensical one: what is owned by the nation is "public", what is owned by individuals is private. Here: public, i.e. owned by the province, the city or the country.

Wow, was it necessary to "clown" on the clown for his question?

ANYWAY, I'm encountering a similar issue. I have one offer from a private school that pays more and a public that pays less.

I believe the public salary would be about 7700RMB a month. And that figure includes a housing stipend of 2000 a month. This is in Shanghai btw.

It is when you're as pedantic as roger. How else do you think he got over 7,000 posts?

ebolayatollah,

7700 plus housing expense sounds great for a public school. Is it a university or a high school? How many teaching hours a week do you have? If they're not asking for crazy hours (I wouldn't work more than 25 in class teaching hours/week, remember you have to grade papers (for writing classes) and prepare for class), I'd jump on the offer. 7700 is plenty to live on, and you can always supplement your income with some private tutoring the side if you need the extra money.

Good luck!

Yeah, yeah, jizzo: sorry for that incident...I hope you understand that your question was not really a good one either.
