What are the chances of being a victim of robbery or burglary in Vietnam? Is it something that happens to almost every foreigner who stays in Vietnam for a while? Is it something that can be avoided if you are very careful? I'm bringing a laptop computer to Vietnam, and I worry about it being stolen. |

I've never felt threatened nor intimidated in Saigon. In fact, I feel much, much safer here than in many cities in the U.S. of comparable size.
It seems that theft is mostly a crime of opportunity here.
Meaning, if you lock up your apartment, and take the standard precautions you should be OK.
I assume you'll keep your laptop in your apartment most of the time. |

Agreed.
I've never been in a safer country (road chaos apart)
Absolutely no threat from the friendly locals, both in HCMC, Can Tho or elsewhere I'm sure. |

Well, yes HCMC is safe from violent crime but we all know at least one person who has lost a mobile phone or had their bag grabbed, sometimes unsuccessfully. Caution and awareness are required. |
