What's the silliest/dumbest/most notably shocking thing that you've witnessed firsthand on the train?
In the last month or so, I've seen a salaryman wet himself, seen another wake up and open up his briefcase only to puke in it and on his laptop before going back to sleep, and a grizzled ojiisan get buck naked and start dancing. (These were all on JR East north of Tokyo)
I'm sure there's some other good ones... |

couple weeks ago. catching the train to my university. The cariage is full of students, mostly girls. An adolescent boy with possibly downs syndrome, definitly some kind of retardation, gets on, sits down. After a few minutes he starts vigourously masterbating himself though thank God through his trousers. As soon as the train stopped he was up and out as if looking for a place to umm, lighten his load. He was sat next to me and I kept thinking should I say "Dame" but in the end thought that he would just get confused with some gaijin talking to him. |

Saw some kids burning one on a packed train in the area between cars.
Some gambling kook sitting with his unit on display with giggling school girls enjoying the show.
People regularly riding airtight carriages, seems that people prefer that to perhaps cracking some windows. What is with the aversion to fresh air and sunshine anyway? Seems to develop in school years and continue through life. Way lame. Reminds me of my students who say they don't like going to the park because it is dirty. They don't mean litter, they mean nature, you know soil and such. |

Was on a train in Korea and I walked down to the rest room, but stopped at the last seat, because there was this cute woman sitting on the floor with her face buried into some guys crotch. He had his pants on of course, and was asleep. It was a packed train and one of those times when people were forced to sit anywhere they could. |

Yeah, it's been a while since I read it too. But I do think there are very strong parallels. Despite a supposed "love of nature" most Japanese live a life that's not much different than a Tokyo capsule hotel.
Once when I was looking into organizing a student trip to Yemen, I thought about running some sort of orientation boot camp where I'd ask my female students to crush raw eggs in their hands without squealing. |

If these girls are the same sort who seem to think nothing of shovelling Alien (TM) slime (aka 'nattou') into their mouths through their formative years, then I'm sure a few squishy eggs wouldn't "break" them (especially when you consider they might've had sukiyaki at least the once).
Hmm...nominations for more gruelling tasks for abu's bootcamp trainees, anyone? Perhaps a ride on JR East north of Tokyo? |

Had an interesting time in Hong Kong. A mother didn't want to have her kid get off to pee, so she had him pee into a plastic bag on the train. Then, she's holding the bag while it is dripping all over the carriage, and no one said a word, including me!
On the trains here in Japan, I am often amazed by;
men shaving, girls putting on nylons (good show though), people talking about sex on the trains on their cells, and people flailing around like ghosts when they are drunk (one guy fell over the bar at the end of the bench onto to someone, and he didn't notice when someone pushed him off the bench!
Myself, I fell on some people in Germany, couldn't keep my balance after an early start with jet lag still and a rocking train. Almost no one said a word, I apologized as best I could, but my German sucks. I wouldn't have been up, but we had transferred before I could grab a bathroom on the platform. |

Right on GJ & FH, just got a couple of good laughs(out loud)!!!
Wondering if I should go on about some of the stuff I have done on trains?
Probably not here.
Hi Abu,
I am confusing Huxley and Orwell, can you set me straight?
Enjoy,

Why don't I get to see ladies putting on nylons on the train?
Most of my good train stories happened back home, riding the LRT in Edmonton, AB.
Once I had 3 stoners COMPLETELY baked, sit next to me and ask me, "Do you take drugs?"
I said, "No." So one of them asked, "Why not?" I replied, "Because I don't want to look like you!"
They never did quite get that one -- they were pretty confused.
I tend to avoid public transportation whenever humanly possible. Planes, trains, busses... I hate em all with a passion. |
