I have also been through the EMB employment process, which was relatively smooth.

I have just received confirmation that my application for a visa / entry permit has been approved and processed.

However, I have been instructed to pick it up IN PERSON at the immigration building within a few days of my arrival.

Does this mean I need to enter Hong Kong on a tourist visa? I guess I don't tell Immigration anything on arrival? Will there be a problem at the departure airport as I have a one-way ticket?

Any advice appreciated! Also 6 days until I leave for Hong Kong!

The hotel is booked for 2 weeks. I start on 3rd January. The SET has been excellent - communication by e-mail every few days on teaching ideas, and general administrative issues.

I also received confirmation that the Special Allowance has increased and should be paid in December salaries and with back payments from the start of the current academic year.

Well, any advice on the visa issue would be welcomed!

It does sound as if you have to enter on a visitor's visa, which can be done this end on one-way tickets, but I know people can't leave Canada on one-way tickets. Check with your airline in the UK for their policy on this. Show them your contract and a copy of the email/letter telling you to pick up your visa here in person to see if that is enough to let you fly on a one-way ticket.
And if there are any questions on arrival, have those documents ready to show the immigration officer. You can tell him your real reason for coming -- it's probably all in their computer anyway.
Yes, we have all received our back payments of the special allowance and it is now up to HKD12950 per month.
Be prepared to duck over to Macau and back again to activate your visa -- it can be done in HK, but it's not easily done, so most people go to Macau. The visa is actually an entry visa (I don't understand why) which is why you have to leave the country and then return. Ferry trip will cost about HKD350 round trip. Sightseeing not expensive, dinner at a Portuguese restaurant not expensive, either.

I came from England in 2002 without a working visa and a one way ticket and didn't have any problems. They don't seem to ask for a ticket at the immigration at the airport. My partner is Ghanaian and comes through regularly - he has never been asked to show his ticket.
If you have been asked to go to immigration to pick up your visa you might not have to go out of the country. I didn't has the school had already applied for it and I just had to have a letter from them explaining why I had come before it had been issued.
