Hi, it might be dangerous posting this here, but if no one tells China, then we are safe!

For anyone who hates being blocked out of sites eg blogspot or BBC no longer.

Just put this before the web address (no HTTP:// required) and you can read anything you like. Unblocked. YAY

Doesn't seem to work for me Sad
btw, blogspot seems to have been unblocked recently.
Also, for some time wikipedia has been blocked which is unbelievably f**king annoying as I need it for my work (and it happens to be the best part of the internet, too ..). If anybody knows a way round that, I'll tell you how to get the bbc news Wink
Also, does anyone know any other good websites for proxies other than proxy4free? I find it takes hours to find a proxy that actually works at anything other than a snail's pace, if at all.

Oh, well tell me the site your looking for and I'll try it out.

BTW if you go to
http://www.google.com/translate?langpair=en|en&u=www.wikipedia.org/
then it loads the front page. Then you can click on your chosen language.

It's a bit slow.

I'll bite, how do you get into the BBC?

And - I'm down in Guangdong and I still can't get anything on Blogspot. I have tried about 20 times in the last week. Where are you that you can get it?

OK so let's see:

First, I am also in guangdong (guangzhou). I just tried blogspot.com and it's working. It has been for a few weeks.
My best guess is that the access control is set at the ISP level. The way each ISP implements it might well be variable, even within province.

The google thing looked like it might be working but then it kept actually trying to access the site (I could see it in the status bar of firefox). Anyway it was either way too slow or just not working. Mainly I was trying wikipedia but other stuff too. The other one I wanted was www.ft.com which is horribly intermittent here.

OK I'm a bit reluctant to share the bbc trick, probably it will now stop working in a few weeks Smile, but all you have to do is use newsvote.bbc.co.uk and you have a near-perfect mirror of the entire news site.

Here's a foolproof way to get around that nasty lil Great Firewall without paying a penny.

Download Mozilla Firefox http://www.mozilla.org
Download Your Freedom http://www.your-freedom.net
Sign up for a free Your Freedom account.
Download Switchproxy Addon for Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org (Not sure if that's correct can just search for Switchproxy Firefox in google and it'll give you a link though)

Set up Your Freedom using the setup wizard when you first install it and load it, should have a little doorway icon which is open with a green background near your computers clock if it's working properly.

In the Switch Proxy toolbar in Firefox enter your schools proxy information if your school runs on one and save that as School, if not just leave it as none, and set up another proxy called Your Freedom in this one enter LOCALHOST in HTTP Proxy, FTP Proxy etc. In the port section enter 8080 for the first four and 1080 for the last one, and click on the button which says Socks5.

Now if you ever come across a site which is blocked by your ISP, School or the Greatfirewall just load up Your Freedom and use the SwitchProxy Toolbar to switch from School/None to the Your Freedom proxy and it will load no problems, it's kinda slow but it works perfectly every time, if you're willing to pay a bit of money you can buy a paid account for Your Freedom which will give you more bandwidth.

Enjoy!

Not true, you can follow almost all of them. Most (80-90%) of the news site is mirrored at newsvote.bbc.co.uk.

You can use it with firefox as well right??? Oh - I guess I'll just give it a go hey!!!

Well - I guess the Google thing doesnt work with most things, and for that I am sorry (I got really excited and wanted to share without fully testing it) but anyway - i love where the thread is going!!!! Thanks for the advice Mike - you obviously know more about this than I do!

Hey Erineyes,

No worries, thought I'd share I use it to get everything, yes you can use it with Firefox, Mozilla Firefox = Firefox just the full name, you can do it one of two ways, download the SwitchProxy addon for Firefox which you can find on their extensions site https://addons.mozilla.org or you can do it by clicking on "Tools" at the top of Firefox, then "Options", on the "General" tab click on "Connection Settings" and change the Proxies (HTTP, FTP etc) to LOCALHOST and change the Ports to 8080 except for the one which says SOCKS change the port in that to 1080, this isn't as convenient though as you have to change it back to your schools proxy or leave it blank if your school doesn't have a proxy. (Generally if you have a modem in your apartment then you don't have a proxy)

Make sure you've downloaded Your Freedom too and signed up for a free account, and that Your Freedom is working properly.

Then just use Firefox as you would normally, just type in news.bbc.co.uk and it should come up fine.

Hey waxwing,

Your Freedom is faster than Proxies4free you get 64kb/s Bandwidth on the free accounts and at non peak hours loading a webpage is as fast as using a Dialup modem through the method I posted above, if you are willing to pay for more bandwidth it's even faster but I'm poor so I stick to their lovely free service, kudos to the guys at Your Freedom for letting me view the BBC for the past year or so!
