Can someone please tell me why a post gets locked? For example why has this happened to the Teachermexconnect discussion? Also what is a sticky?

Forums don't get locked. (The whole thing is a "forum," for example, the General Latin America Discussion Forum is the page we're on now.)

Threads are the individual posting "conversations" and they can get locked.

A "Sticky" is when a moderator decides that a thread is important, useful, or interesting enough to be preserved for all time. They appear at the top of the forum page, and unlike other threads, do not move down the list over time, even if nobody is posting on them. They stick to the top of the list.

As to why threads get locked, I seem to remember a whole series of possible reasons, which you can check on the forum rules. (I think there's a sticky about them on either "General Discussion" or the "Newbie" forum, but I'm not sure.)

The one I've seen most commonly is that they tend to get locked when posters abuse each other. They can also be locked or dissapeared if they get too far off topic.

Again, if I remember the rules, a moderator can lock, move, or delete a thread any time they feel the rules have been broken. They sometimes offer warnings first, or reasons after, but aren't required to.

As to what happened on teachermexconnect, I suspect, but do not know, that it was related to one poster's query about other posters external employment situations, which may violate the anonymity that we all post under. (Sorry, that was my bad...)

Speaking of stickies, anytime I log on here and see the "if your're thinking of teaching in Ecuador..." it drives me nuts. I don't suppose there's any way we can change that? Or maybe I'm just a grumpy perfectionist Smile

I'm sorry Ryans, I didn't mean to pick. I just saw a few things that made me pause, and then as we were joking about your employability, well, I thought it was funny...and sincerely hope no offence was taken.
But your comment

confuses me a bit. The "If your're thinking of teaching in Ecuador" sticky is simply not mine. I realize that I'm the most vocal poster currently in Ecuador, but that thing has been there for ages. I seem to remember reading it before I came to Ecuador. That was NOT my bad.

Take care,
Justin

A post usually gets locked when Moonraven is around. I think about 75 percent of the post she participated in got locked.

Thanks for the info. I would just really like the post opened again, as I see that the organization is still advertising their poor services and would like to keep the discussion going. I really didn't see anything wrong with the conversation and would love to know the exact reason for the lock.

Why thank you! But seriously...

OP, if you really want to know about why a post is locked, you could ask a moderator. (Although I have no idea which one locked it.) They don't have to offer any explanation, but they may if they feel it will be in some way helpful. If there's a topic that you find locked that interests you, you could open another thread- trying to omit whatever may have been offensive of objectionable in the original. If this is your plan, I would see if one of the mods could let you know exactly what the problem with the original was, so that you can avoid repeating it.

For me, the original thread you're referring to served it's purpose, and there's no further need for info on that subject. And I liked the fact that it was fairly even handed. (Pointing out problems people may have had with services is fair. Pointing out that some have had positive experiences is also fair. It seemed balanced to me.)

regards,
Justin
